Suriname Ambassador Visits UEW to Advance Academic and Cultural Partnerships
Her Excellency Fidelia Graand-Galon, the Ambassador of the Republic of Suriname to Ghana, paid a courtesy call on the Management of the University of Education, Winneba (UEW) to explore strategic partnerships in higher education, research and cultural exchange between the University and institutions in Suriname.
The meeting, held at the Council Chamber, brought together members of the University Management, faculty representatives and officials of the Embassy of Suriname to discuss opportunities for academic collaboration, staff and student exchanges, language studies and research partnerships to strengthen bilateral relations through education.
Welcoming the delegation, Prof. Esther Yeboah Danso-Wiredu, the Pro-Vice-Chancellor of UEW, described the visit as another significant step in the University's internationalisation agenda. She reaffirmed UEW's commitment to expanding global partnerships that enrich teaching, learning and research while exposing staff and students to diverse academic and cultural experiences. She expressed confidence that the engagement would culminate in mutually beneficial collaborations between the two countries.
Mr. Steve van Kamassah, Deputy Registrar of the Division of Publications and Communication, noted that the longstanding historical and cultural ties between Ghana and Suriname provide a strong foundation for sustainable collaboration in higher education, research and cultural preservation.
Addressing the gathering, H. E. Fidelia Graand-Galon expressed appreciation for the warm reception and reaffirmed Suriname's commitment to strengthening educational and cultural cooperation with Ghana. She observed that the shared historical connections between the two countries present unique opportunities for universities to collaborate in research, faculty and student exchanges, language development and cultural initiatives that promote mutual understanding and sustainable development.
Prof. Albert Agbesi Wornyo, the Dean of the School of Communication and Media Studies, called for partnerships that extend beyond ceremonial engagements to include joint research, curriculum development, scholarly exchanges and collaborative publications.
Prof. Andy Ofori-Birikorang, Patron of the Communication Students Association, also underscored the importance of advancing African diaspora studies, history, language and culture through collaboration with Surinamese institutions.
Contributors to the discussions included Mr. Stephen Zoure, President of the Communication Students Association and Chair of COMSSA FEST 2026; Mr. Daniel Yidana, representing the University Internal Auditor and Arc. Grace Akweley Oppong Peprah, Director of Works and Physical Development, reiterated the University's readiness to support practical frameworks for academic exchanges, institutional cooperation and international partnerships while highlighting UEW's growing infrastructure to support global collaborations.
The meeting concluded with a shared commitment to pursue concrete partnerships in research, academic exchanges and cultural engagement, reinforcing the mutual resolve of the University of Education, Winneba and institutions in the Republic of Suriname to deepen cooperation and advance higher education through sustained international collaboration.
