History

The Department has been running graduate programmes in Communication and Media Studies since its establishment in 2007. In addition to reviewing the content and structure of the existing graduate programme, the Department proposed to introduce a B.A in Communication Studies Programme to begin from the 2018/2019 academic year. The undergraduate programme will consist of three main areas of specialization or focus. They include Strategic Communication, Development Communication and Journalism. The Department proposes that the programme be offered for both the full time on-campus and sandwich sessions. The overall rationale and objectives of the programme is in consonance with the vision and mission of University of Education, Winneba. 

Objectives

  • appreciate the central role of communication in human existence;
  • communicate more effectively in both oral and written modes, with attention to ethical, social, linguistic and discoursal considerations;
  • demonstrate the ability to analyze and critically evaluate communication practices, messages and outcomes in various context;
  • apply with confidence communication skills and knowledge in their careers and/or future academic endeavours;
  • acquire the know-how for producing and analyzing media content as well as develop methods and approaches to the teaching of media literacy.

Achievements

This Communication programme draws on the vast resources in language teaching and training currently available at the University of Education, Winneba, to bear on the content and practice of communication. The programme emphasizes the acquisition of skills in the use of language, the central function of which is communication.  The Department has trained a lot of people who are making great impact in the field of communication. Some are currently teaching in the Department and delivering excellently. The Department was the first in the University to run only postgraduate programmes.
