Emotional intelligence, self-regulation, and psychological resilience as predictors of anxiety symptoms among university students in Ghana

Abstract

Background: Anxiety disorders among university students are increasingly recognised as a major public mental health concern due to their negative impact on academic performance and psychological well-being. Emerging evidence suggests that emotional intelligence, self-regulation, and psychological resilience are key protective factors; however, their integrated roles within a moderated mediation framework remain underexplored, particularly in Ghanaian university contexts. Methods: A correlational cross-sectional design was employed among 850 undergraduate university students in Ghana. Standardised instruments were used to measure emotional intelligence, self-regulation, psychological resilience, and anxiety disorders (GAD-7). Data were analysed using descriptive statistics, Pearson correlation, multiple regression, mediation analysis with bootstrapping, and moderated mediation analysis. Results: Emotional intelligence was significantly and negatively associated with anxiety disorders (β =-0.45, p < .001), accounting for 20% of variance. Self-regulation partially mediated this relationship, explaining 50% of the total indirect effect. Psychological resilience further demonstrated both mediating and moderating effects, with higher resilience strengthening the protective impact of self-regulation on anxiety. The moderated mediation model accounted for 37–38% of the variance in anxiety disorders, with stronger indirect effects observed at higher levels of resilience. Conclusion: Emotional intelligence reduces anxiety both directly and indirectly through self-regulation, while psychological resilience enhances these protective pathways. Limitations: Although the cross-sectional design and self-report measures limit causal inference and may intro duce response bias, these were mitigated through bootstrapped mediation and moderated mediation analyses. Nonetheless, longitudinal studies are needed for stronger causal validation.

Policy Contributions

The findings extend Self-Regulation Theory by empirically demon strating a structured psychological pathway linking emotional intelli gence to anxiety disorders through self-regulation, with psychological resilience acting as a contextual amplifier. This supports the view that self-regulation is not an isolated cognitive mechanism but operates as part of an integrated emotional–adaptive system. The study further re fines the theory by showing that emotional intelligence functions as an upstream regulatory resource that activates self-regulatory processes, which then translate into emotional outcomes such as reduced anxiety. The significant moderated mediation effect also strengthens theoretical arguments that psychological adaptation is not linear but depends on interacting protective factors, particularly resilience. This contributes to contemporary extensions of self-regulation frameworks that emphasize dynamic, multi-layered psychological systems rather than single- pathway explanations of behaviour and mental health. The study ad vances theoretical understanding by positioning emotional intelligence, self-regulation, and resilience as interconnected mechanisms within a unified model of psychological adjustment among university students. Practically, the findings highlight the importance of designing university-based mental health interventions that go beyond symptom management to focus on strengthening core psychological resources. First, emotional intelligence training programs should be integrated into student development initiatives, as improving emotional awareness and regulation can directly reduce anxiety levels. Second, universities should promote self-regulation skills through academic support systems such as study skills workshops, counselling services, and structured mentoring programmes that enhance students’ ability to manage stress and academic pressure effectively. Third, resilience-building in terventions should be prioritised, particularly for students in high-stress academic environments. Programs that promote coping flexibility, stress adaptation, and psychological strength can significantly enhance the protective effect of self-regulation against anxiety. Finally, the findings suggest that mental health strategies should adopt a combined approach, targeting emotional intelligence, self-regulation, and resil ience simultaneously rather than in isolation. This integrated approach is likely to produce more sustainable improvements in student psycho logical well-being within Ghanaian universities and similar contexts
