Odau Paramount Chief Allocates Land for Proposed UEW Campus

Odeneho Ofosu Kwabi Ayebiahwe, the Paramount Chief of the Odau Traditional Area, has announced the allocation of land to the University of Education, Winneba (UEW) for the establishment of a campus in his traditional area to expand access to quality higher education for community members.

The announcement was made during a courtesy call on the University's Management at the Council Chamber on Friday, 12th June, 2026.

The visit, which also featured legendary Ghanaian highlife musician Pat Thomas, formed part of activities under “SoundFlames,” an initiative organised by the Department of Music Education to honour the celebrated musician.

Speaking during the engagement, Odeneho Ofosu Kwabi Ayebiahwe outlined several developmental projects undertaken during his four-year reign including the construction of a modern palace, the provision of accommodation for police officers to enhance security and the establishment of scholarship schemes for needy students within the traditional area.

He emphasised that leadership should focus on serving the people rather than merely exercising authority over them. To further advance educational development in the area, he disclosed that land had been earmarked for UEW to establish a campus for residents to access quality tertiary education closer to home.

Prof. Stephen Jobson Mitchual, the Vice-Chancellor of UEW, expressed appreciation to the Paramount Chief and Pat Thomas for honouring the University's invitation and engaging with students and members of the University community.  

He underscored UEW's deep respect for traditional leadership and its commitment to preserving and promoting Ghana's rich cultural and musical heritage. He noted that opportunities for students to engage directly with distinguished personalities and opinion leaders contribute significantly to their holistic development.

Prof. Mitchual welcomed the prospect of collaboration between UEW and the Odau Traditional Authority to expand access to quality education within the community.

Prof. Frimpong Kaakyire Duku, the Principal of the College for Distance and e-Learning, who served as spokesperson for the University in accordance with tradition, also welcomed the delegation. He highlighted UEW's pioneering role in distance education and reiterated the University's commitment to providing quality education across Ghana.

Pat Thomas expressed gratitude to the Department of Music Education and the Management of UEW for the honour bestowed on him through the “SoundFlames” initiative. He also thanked Odeneho Ofosu Kwabi Ayebiahwe for accepting to chair the programme held in his honour.

The courtesy call reinforced UEW's commitment to strengthening partnerships with traditional authorities and cultural icons in advancing education, community development and the preservation of Ghanaian heritage.
