Transport, Health and Sanitation Share Honours in Thrilling Staff Friendly Match
The Transport Section under the Division of Operations of the University of Education, Winneba (UEW) and the Health and Sanitation Unit played out an entertaining 1-1 draw in a friendly football match at the UEW Hockey Field on Friday, 29th May, 2026.
The fiercely contested but friendly encounter showcased teamwork, fitness and camaraderie among staff as both outfits battled for supremacy in a game that produced moments of skill, resilience and excitement.
Transport opened the scoring in the first half through a stunning long-range strike that caught the Health and Sanitation goalkeeper off his line, sending spectators into jubilation.
Health and Sanitation, champions of the most recent Registrar's Cup competition, responded strongly after the break and demonstrated their pedigree by pecking back Transport to level the score in the second half.
The match could have produced more goals but for the outstanding performance of the Transport goalkeeper, whose series of crucial saves denied Health and Sanitation several clear scoring opportunities and ensured his side remained in contention until the final whistle.
Speaking after the match, Mr. Elijah Otis Awuni, the Transport Officer, said the initiative formed part of efforts to promote staff wellness, relieve work-related stress and encourage physical fitness among personnel of the University.
According to him, staff of the Transport Section spend most of their time providing transportation services for the University including weekends and holidays with little opportunity for recreation and relaxation.
"All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy," he remarked, explaining that the match provided an opportunity for staff to step away from their daily routines, exercise and recharge for the responsibilities ahead,” he said.
Beyond fitness and recreation, he indicated that the match strengthened social bonds among staff and provided an avenue for employees from both departments to interact and get to know one another better.
Mr. Awuni encouraged staff across the University to embrace regular physical activity as a means of reducing stress and improving overall wellbeing. He stressed that exercise remains essential regardless of one's workload or position.
He disclosed that the Security Section has already expressed interest in a similar encounter, hinting at another interdepartmental friendly match in the near future.
The match forms part of ongoing efforts by staff of the University to promote healthy living, teamwork and stronger workplace relationships through sporting and recreational activities.
