UEW Matriculates 256 Private School Leaders and Educators
The University of Education, Winneba (UEW), has held a matriculation ceremony to formally welcome 256 new sandwich students to its diverse academic community.
This cohort, comprising owners, leaders, educators, and administrators from private schools across the nation, embarked on a journey of advanced learning, enrolling in certificate, diploma, bachelor's, and master's programmes designed to enhance their educational expertise and leadership capabilities.
The matriculation ceremony, a highlight of the university's academic calendar, underscored UEW's commitment to nurturing skilled professionals in the education sector.
In his address, Prof. Stephen Jobson Mitchual, Vice-Chancellor of UEW, underscored the transformative nature of the programme and its critical importance to Ghana’s private education sector. "This programme is not just an academic pursuit; it is a bold step towards reshaping private education and equipping leaders with the skills needed to inspire excellence," he said.
Prof. Mitchual highlighted the growing complexities of managing private schools in Ghana, describing this initiative as a tailored response to these challenges. “Private schools are indispensable to our education system, yet their leaders and educators face increasingly complex demands. This programme is designed to empower you with innovative leadership, effective management strategies, and cutting-edge teaching methodologies to transform your institutions and communities,” he remarked.
The initiative, a collaborative effort with the Ghana National Council of Private Schools (GNACOPS), underscores UEW’s commitment to fostering excellence in private education. Prof. Mitchual lauded this partnership, stating, "Together, we are forging a path towards a future where private schools can thrive as beacons of quality education in Ghana."
The Vice-Chancellor set high expectations for the matriculants, urging them to take full advantage of the programme’s resources. He stressed the importance of active engagement, ethical practices, and professional growth. “You are now part of a community that believes in your ability to lead and inspire change in the private education sector. Commit to excellence, embrace innovation, and lead with integrity. The future of private education in Ghana depends on leaders like you,” he asserted.
Prof. Mitchual encouraged the students to embrace their roles as catalysts for change. He charged them to be ambassadors of the programme and the university, emphasising that their success would reflect the institution’s values of excellence and innovation.
Mrs. Wilhelmina Tete-Mensah, Acting Registrar of UEW, highlighted the significance of matriculation as a pivotal event in a student’s academic journey, signifying their formal acceptance as junior members of the institution. She encouraged them to carefully study the university’s guidelines, take full advantage of the facilities and opportunities provided, and strive for excellence in their academic pursuits.
Mrs. Wilhelmina Tete-Mensah called on the students to actively protect the UEW brand and enhance its reputation, reminding them that their collective efforts would positively impact the nation.
Including private school owners, leaders, educators, and administrators in UEW's academic programmes aligns with national goals to uplift educational standards through targeted professional training. The curriculum, which focuses on leadership, management, and modern teaching methods, coupled with mentorship from seasoned educators and industry experts, is structured to address contemporary challenges in education, thus preparing graduates to implement effective strategies within their schools.
