Abstract

Despite the rapid expansion and penetration of ICTs and the internet globally, the digital divide remains a prevalent global problem within developing countries. This keeps deepening the digital exclusion and social inequalities in developing countries. In Ghana, it has resulted in a rural–urban digital divide. Digital inclusion has been identified as the solution to such inequalities, and there have been calls for initiatives to bridge the divide, especially in developing countries. Also, the media environments in Ghana support the integration of new media technologies into traditional media operations. Therefore, this study examines the potential of community radio (Radio Peace and Breezy FM) in bridging the rural–urban divide in Ghana. Through 15 interviews and document analysis of 53 posts, data is gathered and analysed through the cultural discourse analysis theory lens. Findings revealed that via integration of new media technologies at the pre-production, production and post-production stages, the stations encouraged digital inclusion and exclusion of their youthful and elderly audience.
