UEW Sports Contingent Urged to Excel at 2023 ECOWAS Games

The sports contingent representing the University of Education, Winneba (UEW), has received a resounding send-off from the university's management as they embark on the journey to compete in the prestigious 2023 West African Universities Games (WAUG) at Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife in Nigeria.

Led by Dr. Theophilus Mensah, Chairman of the UEW Directorate of Amalgamated Clubs and Sports, the team made a courtesy call to the university administration to seek permission and announce their departure for the multi-sport event, also known as the "ECOWAS Students Games," scheduled from Saturday, 16th to Friday, 22nd December, 2023.

The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Stephen Jobson Mitchual, expressed confidence in the team's abilities, urging them to compete with discipline that underlines the core values of the university. "I am extremely hopeful that you’ll come home with medals," he stated, emphasising the importance of hard work and incorporating faith in their endeavours.

The Pro-Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Victor Antwi, challenged the team to uplift the image of UEW, encouraging them to act as ambassadors for the institution. "Go and sell the school to them so that they will come," he emphasised, aiming not only for athletic success but also to attract prospective students from Nigeria.

Prof. Dominic Danso Mensah, Principal of the College for Languages Education, Ajumako Campus, expressed extreme confidence in the team's potential to secure gold medals, particularly highlighting the prowess of the sprinter and table tennis team with their distinguished experience on the African continent.

The Principal of the College for Distance and e-Learning (CODeL), UEW, Prof. Frimpong Kaakyire Duku, tasked coaches to replicate the honours achieved in Kenya during the 10th Federation of African University Sports (FASU) Games and the Ghana University Sports Association (GUSA) games.

As the UEW sports contingent heads to Nigeria, they carry not only the hopes of the university but also the aspiration to make a mark on the West African stage, showcasing their talent, dedication, and the values instilled by the institution.
