UEW Basic School Hosts Carols Service to Promote Holistic Child Growth
The University of Education, Winneba (UEW) Basic School has held its Annual Carols Service, bringing together pupils, parents, teachers and members of the university community to celebrate the Christmas season while reinforcing the institution’s commitment to holistic child development in faith, discipline and academic excellence.
The service, which took place at the school premises on Wednesday, 17th December, 2025, was moderated by Mr. Maxwell Baffoe-Bonnie. He expressed gratitude to parents and guardians for their continued support of the school and the carols service as a significant moment in the UEW Basic School calendar.
The service featured prayers, songs, and dramatic presentations by pupils depicting the Nativity story, which showcased their talents and reinforced lessons of humility, love, and service. The programme ended with a closing prayer, committing the learners, staff and families to God’s protection and guidance.
The programme officially began with an opening prayer by Mr. Joseph Baidoo, a teacher at UEW Basic School. He also read from Genesis Chapter 3, verses 8 to 15, reminding the congregation of humanity’s fall and God’s redemptive plan which forms the foundation of the Christmas message. The scripture reading set a reflective tone for the service and encouraged participants to consider the significance of obedience, responsibility and divine grace.
Continuing the scriptural reflections, Ms. Mavis Andoh, also a teacher at UEW Basic School, read from Isaiah Chapter 9, verses 2 to 7. Her reading highlighted the prophecy of the birth of Christ as the Light that brings hope, peace and joy to the world. The passage emphasised Christ as the Wonderful Counsellor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father and Prince of Peace, reinforcing the theme of hope and renewal that defines the Advent season.
A parent, Miss Angelina Asanguna, further enriched the service with a reading from Matthew Chapter 2, verses 1 to 12. She narrated the story of the visit of the wise men to the newborn King, underscoring the importance of worship, obedience to God’s direction and the recognition of Christ’s kingship. Her participation reflected the strong partnership between the school and parents in nurturing the moral and spiritual lives of learners.
The sermon was delivered by Rev. Canon James Andoh-Appiah, Assistant Registrar at the Office of the Dean of Student Affairs, UEW. Drawing from Luke Chapter 2, verse 52, he spoke on the growth of Jesus in wisdom, stature and in favour with God and humanity.
Rev. Andoh-Appiah identified four key thematic areas in child development: intellectual, physical, social and spiritual. He stressed the shared responsibility of parents and teachers in nurturing children in these domains. He emphasised that education at UEW Basic School goes beyond academics to include character formation, healthy living and spiritual grounding.
Rev. Andoh-Appiah further urged parents to take seriously their biblical responsibility of training children, referencing Proverbs Chapter 22, verse 6. He encouraged families to seize every opportunity to guide and mentor children progressively, reminding them that children are a heritage from God entrusted into their care. He also reflected on the Advent season, calling on Christians to prepare their hearts for the second coming of Christ through righteous living and faithful service.
The Annual Carols Service once again affirmed UEW Basic School’s mission of nurturing well-rounded learners who excel academically, grow morally and serve society with integrity, in line with the broader vision and philosophy of the UEW.
