UEW has Capacity to become World’s Best Teacher Education University – Education Minister
The Minister of Education, Hon. Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, has engendered a sense of optimism about the University of Education, Winneba's (UEW) potential to establish itself as the preeminent global hub for teacher education.
The Minister underscored the university's solid foundation and unveiled plans that could catapult UEW to international acclaim in an exclusive interview with the UEW Media following a closed-door meeting with the Management of the University in Accra on Monday, 4th December, 2023.
Management was at the meeting to introduce the Chancellor, Neenyi Ghartey VII, and Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Stephen Jobson Mitchual to the Education Minister.
The duo presented a roadmap for UEW's transformation into the world's foremost institution for teacher education. Hon. Dr. Adutwum expressed his wholehearted support for the outlined initiatives, drawing parallels with prestigious institutions such as Columbia and Teachers College.
"I promise to work with the university. The leadership has outlined for me some of the great things they intend to do, and I’m fully in support. I believe UEW has the potential to become the best university for education in the world, like Columbia and Teachers College, and what they do there," he affirmed.
The Member of Parliament for Bosomtwe Constituency expressed unwavering confidence in the current Vice-Chancellor, Chancellor, and the dedicated management team. He emphasised their collective responsibility to propel UEW to global prominence, stating, "We are the only ones that can stop ourselves from becoming the best. So, I have full confidence in the current leadership of UEW. I’m expecting so much from them."
Encouraging the University Management to contribute to the local community, Hon. Dr. Adutwum urged them to be actively involved in the transformation of Effutu, ensuring that the indigenes benefit from the university's presence. Anticipating proposals for uplifting the university's fortunes, he reiterated his commitment to supporting initiatives that enhance educational opportunities for the community.
The Education Minister also charged the Vice-Chancellor to foster unity and harmony among staff and stakeholders, emphasising the need for a collective vision for UEW's future. "I’ve asked the Vice-Chancellor to endeavour to bring the university together. There should be no factions. The only faction that should be there should be UEW, and its future should be something that guides us all," he advised.
As UEW sets its sights on global excellence in teacher education, the nation eagerly awaits the realisation of its potential under the stewardship of the dedicated leadership and the support of the Ministry of Education.
