FHASHEE-UEW Receives Fabric Donation from GTP for Students' Project Work
Management of the University of Education, Winneba (UEW) has applauded the Faculty of Health, Allied Sciences and Home Economics Education (FHASHEE) for deepening industry collaboration following a generous donation of 600 yards of wax print fabrics from Ghana Textiles Printing (GTP) Company Limited.
The initiative to support final-year students enrolled in the Clothing and Textiles Education and Integrated Home Economics Education programmes demonstrates the UEW’s strengthened commitment to practical, skills-based training and its contribution to national development.
On Tuesday, 5th August, 2025, a delegation from FHASHEE formally paid a courtesy call on the management of UEW to present the fabric sponsorship package provided by GTP.
Dr. Rosemary Quarcoo of the Department of Integrated Home Economics Education explained that the donation was secured to ease the burden of material costs for students’ final-year projects. “We sought sponsorship from GTP and thankfully received 600 yards of fabric. We are here to inform Management about this kind gesture and present sample pieces of the donated fabric,” she stated.
Prof. Stephen Jobson Mitchual, Vice-Chancellor of UEW, commended the two departments for their initiative and praised the high quality of student output. He expressed concern, however, about the institution’s limited visibility in showcasing such achievements to the public.
“I have seen the garments including swimming costumes, all produced by our students. Yet many people outside do not know what we do here. It is time to publicise your creative works through the University’s website and social media. We need the world to see what UEW truly represents—innovation, creativity and industry-readiness,” he said.
Prof. Mitchual further called for a digital archive of past student designs, suggesting the creation of standardised magazines and online galleries to aid publicity, recruitment and institutional branding. He also urged the department to actively promote GTP in appreciation of the donation, saying, “This story must be told with visuals—pictures and videos of the garments sewn from the GTP fabrics. We owe it to both the sponsors and ourselves.”
Prof. Frimpong Kaakyire Duku, Principal of the College for Distance and e-Learning at UEW, emphasised the importance of broadcasting departmental activities to attract prospective students. “Online publicity enhances enrolment and expands our reach. Let us make this donation and all related activities publicly accessible,” he advised.
Prof. Fred Yao Gbagbo, Acting Dean of FHASHEE, described the meeting as a testament to UEW’s commitment to hands-on, industry-relevant education. “This fabric donation is a strong signal that UEW is not only a teacher training institution but also a hub for technical and practical innovation. We are grateful to GTP, and we hope other organisations will emulate this example,” he said.
Prof. Gbagbo also highlighted the broader vision of the Vice-Chancellor to introduce more technical programmes and enhance the faculty’s visibility. “There is so much we are doing here that people do not see. We must blow our own horn and tell our own stories,” he stressed.
The event signified UEW’s strategic drive towards strengthening university-industry partnerships, enhancing practical education, and repositioning the institution as a leader in applied learning across disciplines. With GTP’s support, final-year students now have a valuable resource to fuel their creativity while the University takes a decisive step towards greater visibility and impact in Ghana’s fashion and textile sector.
