Achievements
- In November 2022, the Department of HPERS anchored TEAM UEW to win the 26th GUSA games bwith the highest number of medals in all categories.
- The Department of Home Economics Education attained a Faculty status in the year 2020 with four Departments.
- The Faculty has two income generating units, namely, Clothing production Unit (CPU) and the Food Production Unit FPU).
- The CPU has a garment factory where Academic, ceremonial, all kinds of uniforms, sports and other wears are sewn for the University, community, other institutions, and the general public.
- The FPU takes contract catering and also runs restaurant operations at North and South campuses of the University for staff, students and the general public.
- The two units have trained some youth in the Winneba community and employed them.
- The Faculty has trained and graduated about 400 M.Ed and 150 M.Phil Teachers.
- Tracer study which was started in July, 2020 is ongoing in the Faculty and at its data collection stage.
- A former eatery in the Faculty was transformed into a restaurant and moved into a renovated North Campus cafeteria.
- The former eatery was renovated for a third Food and Nutrition laboratory.
- More equipment have been purchased and are now accessible to students and a lot more have been requested for the laboratories to cut down on cost of practical needs for students. Some materials for demonstration and practical examinations are also provided by the Faculty to students.
- The numbers of work tables have been tripled in the Food & Nutrition and Clothing & Textiles laboratories to cater for the increased students’ population.
- The Faculty embarked on a community extension work to sensitize and educate the Winneba Community on covid-19 protocols and measures to boost the immune system. Nose masks made from the universities 25th anniversary cloth were distributed to participants at Winneba Junction Lorry Station and Winneba Beach after the sensitization. The areas covered in this public education were:
- Local food commodities they should eat to help boost their immune system and protect them from diseases including COVID 19
- How to use, clean and keep face masks
- Personal and environmental hygiene and stigmatization
- How to manage family finances to reduce economic hardship
- How to manage children during the partial lock-down and social distancing period
- The Clothing Production Unit (CPU) made 5000 nose masks for the staff of the University. The Clothing Production Unit (CPU) also employed workers from the local community and sewed all academic gowns and other ceremonial clothes used by the University management as well as those of some sister institutions. The unit also sewed laboratory wear for students and uniforms for the security unit of the University.
- A former space for the Clothing Production Unit was converted to a bigger Clothing and Textiles laboratory in 2019.
- The Clothing & Textiles laboratory was stocked with sufficient sewing machines in 2019 so students no longer carry sewing machines about in town and on campus.
- The Faculty library received books, journals and other reading materials from the University library and an alumnus in Mt. Saint Vincent University, Novascotia in 2019.
