The School of Graduate Studies (SGS) at the University of Education, Winneba (UEW), has organised a comprehensive workshop to demystify the thesis defence process for second-year postgraduate students.

The compulsory workshop, which brought together students from various disciplines, was designed to equip participants with the necessary skills and knowledge to navigate the often-daunting thesis defence process.

Chaired by Prof. Samuel Kwesi Asiedu-Addo, the seminar featured an insightful presentation by Prof. Akwasi Kwarteng Amoako-Gyampah, who shared valuable expertise on effective thesis defence and research methodologies.

Addressing an audience of students and faculty members, Prof. Amoako-Gyampah, Vice-Dean of SGS, acknowledged the widespread fear associated with viva voce examinations. He attributed this anxiety to exaggerated and often misleading accounts from past students. Many of you panic just by hearing the words ‘viva voce’ because of all the wrong things you have heard. This workshop is designed to dispel these myths and provide a structured guide to thesis defence success,” he pointed out.

The Vice-Dean outlined key areas of focus, including understanding the concept and evolution of viva voce, effective preparation strategies, and the expectations of examiners. He walked students through the typical structure of a viva voce, from crafting a compelling presentation to handling tough questions with confidence. He also shared insights into common questions posed during thesis defences and the criteria examiners use to assess students’ performances.

According to Prof. Amoako-Gyampah, "The thesis defence is a critical milestone in the postgraduate journey, and it is essential that students are adequately prepared to succeed." He emphasised the importance of careful preparation, effective communication, and confidence in presenting one's research.

The session concluded with an open forum where students had the opportunity to ask questions and clarify their concerns. Prof. Amoako-Gyampah reassured attendees that with proper preparation and a clear understanding of expectations, they could confidently navigate their viva voce and achieve success.

The workshop was widely praised by participants, who expressed gratitude for the valuable insights and practical advice shared by Prof. Amoako-Gyampah and Prof. Asiedu-Addo.

The SGS-UEW workshop is part of the university's ongoing efforts to support postgraduate students in achieving academic success. The university aims to foster a supportive and inclusive academic environment that enables students to thrive by providing valuable resources and expertise.
