Since

Programme History:

The Department of French Education at the University of Education, Winneba, started in 1985, offering a three-year Diploma in French Education. Over the years, it evolved, offering various programs such as the B.Ed. (French) and the current B.A. in French Education. Accreditation by the National Accreditation Board and subsequent autonomy in 2004 marked milestones. The department adapts to educational needs, introducing programs for first degree masters and PhD levels, each tailored to specific needs.

Aims of B.A. French Education Programme:

The four-year B.A. French Education program aims to produce competent graduate teachers proficient in teaching French at pre-tertiary levels in Ghana. Additionally, it seeks to provide functional French knowledge to professionals and the broader Ghanaian public for effective communication in specific contexts.

Rationale for Ph.D. Programme:

The Ph.D. in French responds to demand from candidates with M.Phil. in French, aligning with the University's strategic plans. The Ministry of Education's directive for Ph.D.-qualified faculty members drives the program, addressing the freeze on overseas training sponsorships. The Ph.D. program serves as an alternative for upgrading teaching staff, meeting Ghana's Teacher Education manpower requirements.

Aims of Ph.D. Programme:

The Ph.D. program aims to equip graduates with academic proficiency and professional competence for teaching French at the tertiary level. Emphasis is on research, knowledge dissemination, and influencing policies on French education in Ghana. It also addresses the limited scholarship opportunities for students to study in France or Francophone countries.

Rationale for M.A. Translation Programme:

Introduced in 2010/2011, the M.A. Translation: French & English program diversifies postgraduate offerings, meeting the demand for translators in pre-tertiary and tertiary education. It provides further academic qualification for teachers of French and trains personnel for specialized positions as language trainers and translators.

Aims of M.A. Translation Programme:

The program aims to train students in translation and research as teachers of French, addressing the demand for qualified translators. It caters to students with a first degree in French, offering professional skills for teaching and translation roles.

Rationale for M.Ed. in Teaching of French Programme:

The M.Ed. in Teaching of French targets teachers working as inspectors and in-service training organizers. Delivered through a sandwich mode, it offers quality training in research and teaching of French within a limited timeframe, reflecting the department's vision and mission.

Aims of M.Ed. in Teaching of French Programme

The program aims to offer higher professional training in education to teachers of French for pre-tertiary levels in Ghana. Graduates are expected to be competent in modern teaching trends, serving as trainer of trainers.

Rationale for MPhil in French Programme:

The MPhil in French provides further academic qualification and professional training for teachers of French, acting as the first stage toward doctoral studies. The program aligns with the department's vision of being an internationally recognized center for teacher education and research.

Aims of MPhil in French Programme:

The program aims to provide advanced holistic training in French for research, teaching, or communication. It equips students with advanced knowledge, research competence, and professional skills for teaching French. Additionally, it trains resource persons and provides further training for professionals in a francophone setting.
