STRATCOM-UEW Hosts Seminar on the Future of Public Relations in the Digital Era
The Department of Strategic Communication (STRATCOM) at the University of Education, Winneba (UEW) commemorated World PR Day with a thought-provoking seminar titled "PR in the Digital Age: Leveraging Technology for Effective Communication."
The event, held at the North Campus Mini-Conference Room on 16th July, 2024, brought together PR professionals and students to discuss the future of public relations in the context of rapid digitalisation.
Dr. Mavis Amo-Mensah, Head of STRATCOM, opened the seminar with a warm welcome, underscoring the importance of celebrating World PR Day. She highlighted the seminar's theme as timely and relevant, considering the swift technological advancements reshaping the PR industry.
Dr. Amo-Mensah emphasised that the digital revolution has fundamentally transformed how organisations communicate and interact with their audiences, urging PR practitioners to develop new skills such as digital literacy, data analysis, content creation, and AI proficiency to stay relevant.
"By developing these skills, PR professionals can effectively leverage technology to build mutually beneficial relationships, maintain a positive image, and enhance their organisations' reputation," Dr. Amo-Mensah stated. She encouraged practitioners to embrace AI and technology as tools to enhance their work rather than viewing them as threats.
The seminar featured insightful presentations from notable PR experts, including Mrs. Georgina Asare Fiagbenu, Head of Corporate Communications at MTN Ghana; Mr. Ernest Azutiga, Acting Head of the Department of Publishing and Web Development and Public Relations Officer at UEW; and Mr. Evans Akesse Brempong, Artiste and STRATCOM-UEW Doctoral Student. Each speaker shared their expertise on best PR practices in the digital age, offering valuable insights into how technology is reshaping the PR landscape.
Prof. Albert Agbesi Wornyo, Dean of the School of Communication and Media Studies (SCMS) and Chairman of the seminar, emphasised the importance of authenticity, empathy, and integrity in PR. He highlighted the need for transparent communication, genuine engagement, and upholding ethical standards. Prof. Wornyo urged students and practitioners to leverage digital technologies to enhance their skills and remain relevant in the ever-evolving PR industry.
The seminar aimed to celebrate the art and science of PR, recognising the vital role PR professionals play in building relationships between organisations and their audiences. Discussions focused on maintaining and building mutually beneficial relationships, image, and brands amidst technological advancements.
The event was a resounding success, providing attendees with a deeper understanding of the future of PR in the digital era and equipping them with the knowledge to navigate the dynamic landscape of modern communication.
