DISE-UEW Equips Students on New SHS Curriculum
The Department of Integrated Science Education of the University of Education, Winneba (UEW) has organised a seminar to empower its pre- and post-internship students with deeper knowledge and practical strategies for delivering the New Senior High School (SHS) General Science Teaching and Learning Curriculum.
Held on Wednesday, 13th August, 2025, at SLT 7, South Campus, the seminar brought together students, faculty members and curriculum experts for an interactive session aimed at preparing future science educators for effective curriculum implementation.
Dr. (Mrs.) Nelly Adjoa Sakyi-Hagan, Head of Department, highlighted the Department’s commitment to equipping students with the skills and confidence to embrace learner-centred innovative teaching approaches.
The seminar featured insightful presentations from experts. Dr. Bawa Mbage, Lecturer in Chemistry Education and School Improvement Advisor, provided a comprehensive overview of the new curriculum, emphasising its philosophy, structure and real-world application of science.
Ms. Caroline Asantewaa Biritwum, a teacher at Oti Boateng SHS, broke down the content across four strands—Exploring Materials, Processes for Living, Vigour Behind Life and Relationships with the Environment—while stressing the integration of 21st-century skills, digital literacy, environmental stewardship and continuous assessment.
Mr. Francis Frimpong, a teacher at Swedru SHS, guided participants through the new lesson plan structure, showcasing how core competencies and learner-centred approaches can create engaging, enquiry-based lessons. Dr. Nelly Sakyi-Hagan also led a session on preparing and presenting a Teaching Portfolio, underscoring its value in student assessment and professional advancement.
The seminar concluded with a practical, hands-on session where participants populated learning plans using the new curriculum tools. In her closing remarks, Dr. Nelly Sakyi-Hagan encouraged students to take ownership of their professional growth, assuring them of the Department’s continuous support.
The event was attended by all lecturers of the Department, including Dr. Ernest I. D. Ngman-Wara, Dr. Charles K. Koomson, Dr. (Mrs.) Charity Esenam Anor, Dr. Charles Essiam, Ms. Rebecca Esi Quansah and Mr. Collins Agyemang, reflecting the collective commitment to preparing UEW students for excellence in science education.
