UEW Opens New Hospital with a Promise to Deliver Excellent Healthcare

The University of Education, Winneba (UEW) has officially operationalised its newly built state-of-the-art hospital at a colourful and well-attended ceremony held at the facility's forecourt on Wednesday, 4th June, 2025.  

This marks a transformative milestone in the University’s efforts to promote health and academic excellence.

Speaking at the event, Chairman of the UEW Governing Council, Justice Jacob Charles Amonoo-Monney, praised the collaborative efforts that led to the hospital’s operationalisation.

He encouraged all stakeholders to envision the facility’s future as a teaching hospital supporting a potential medical school at UEW. “Though your beginning may be small, your latter end will greatly increase,” he declared, expressing hope that the hospital would parallel some of the best medical facilities in Ghana and beyond.

The Vice-Chancellor of UEW, Prof. Stephen Jobson Mitchual, underscored the significance of the hospital as a beacon of hope and service for both the university community and the wider Winneba populace. “This project, which began in 2016 and was commissioned in 2023, is now fully operational with comprehensive facilities including emergency units, surgical theatres, maternity wards, dental and eye clinics, and more,” he said.

Prof. Mitchual emphasised that the hospital would help advance national goals on universal health coverage and serve as a shinning example of what unity, vision and perseverance can achieve.

The Director of UEW Health Services, Dr. John Kanyiri Yambah, reaffirmed the hospital’s commitment to delivering responsive, high-quality, client-centered care. “Our dedicated healthcare professionals are passionate about meeting the specific needs of our university community. Collaboration with the Ministry of Health, the Ghana Association of Quasi Health Institutions (GAQHI) and other stakeholders will ensure continuous excellence,” he noted.

Dr. Yambah also outlined plans to outsource expert services where needed to broaden the hospital's capacity and improve healthcare access across the community.

Mr. Isaac Darkoh, Assistant Registrar at the UEW Hospital, described the ceremony as a momentous occasion that reflected UEW’s mission to support the academic journey and well-being of its students through modern, accessible healthcare. He appealed for continued stakeholder support to equip the hospital with the infrastructure and personnel required for sustained service delivery. “This gathering is both a celebration and a forward-looking moment towards healthcare excellence in Winneba and beyond,” he stated.

The UEW Hospital stands as a testament to the university’s dedication to holistic student support, institutional development and national service. With its doors now open, the facility is poised to serve as a hub of innovation and care — not only for UEW but for Ghana as a whole.
