Biography
Dr. Samuel Owoahene Acheampong is a distinguished linguistic scholar specialising in descriptive and theoretical syntax, focusing on Mabia and Ghanaian languages. He completed his doctoral studies at Goethe University Frankfurt (2021-2024), where his dissertation examined the syntax of elliptical constructions in Likpakpaanl. He also earned an MPhil in Applied Linguistics from the University of Education, Winneba (2013-2015), and a First Class honours degree in English from the University of Cape Coast (2006-2010).
His research portfolio focuses on the morphosyntactic analysis of Likpakpaanl and other Mabia languages, specifically on elliptical phenomena, anaphoric elements, and information structure. Dr. Acheampong has made significant contributions to the field through his publications in respected journals, including the International Journal of Language and Culture and the Journal of West African Languages. His work on resumption, long-distance wh-movement, and reflexivisation in Likpakpaanl has advanced our understanding of these syntactic phenomena in African languages.
As an educator, Dr. Acheampong has extensive experience in tertiary education, having served as a Language and Linguistics Tutor and Acting Head of the Department of Languages at St. Vincent College of Education, Yendi. He has also contributed to distance education programs at the University of Education, Winneba, and the University for Development Studies, teaching phonetics, phonology, and general linguistics courses. Dr. Acheampong also serves as a peer reviewer for the Ghana Journal of Linguistics (GJoL) and the Journal of West African Languages (JWAL), where he helps maintain high standards of scholarly discourse in African linguistics.
Dr. Acheampong maintains active involvement in the international linguistic community through his membership in prestigious organisations such as Generative Linguistics in the Old World (GLOW) and the Linguistics Association of Ghana (LAG). His academic excellence has been consistently recognised through prestigious scholarship awards, including a three-year scholarship from the Katholischer Akademischer Ausländer-Dienst (KAAD) for his doctoral studies at Goethe University Frankfurt (2021-2024), complemented by a three-month completion scholarship from the Deutscher Akademischer Austauschdienst (DAAD). His outstanding academic performance also earned him a KAAD scholarship for his Master of Philosophy studies at the University of Education, Winneba (2013-2015), underscoring his commitment to scholarly excellence throughout his academic journey.
Beyond his academic work, Dr. Acheampong contributes significantly to Ghana's language development and education initiatives. He was part of the 150 Master trainers selected nationwide in 2019 to train Basic School teachers on the New Education Curriculum rolled out by NaCCA. He served on the Likpakpaanl Language Development Committee and the Likpakpaanl Orthography Committee, demonstrating his commitment to practical applications of linguistic research for community benefit.
