DEF-UEW Hosts Workshop to Revamp General Education Curriculum
The Department of Educational Foundations (DEF) at the University of Education, Winneba (UEW) hosted a two-day workshop from Thursday, 19th to Friday, 20th December, 2024, aimed at revamping the Professional General Education courses at the University.
The initiative, designed to create comprehensive course manuals and standardised slide decks is to prepare educators for the ongoing academic year while ensuring that the curriculum aligns with evolving educational standards.
Dr. Paul Kobina Effrim, Head of DEF-UEW, underscored the importance of the workshop in the context of recent changes to the Senior High School (SHS) Curriculum and the re-alignment of the Bachelor of Education Programmes to better equip graduates for the challenges of modern educational settings.
"Professional General Education courses serve as the foundation of academic development, equipping students with critical thinking, professional strategies, and problem-solving skills," he noted.
Dr. Effrim highlighted the critical role the development of comprehensive course manuals would play in streamlining course delivery and improving learning outcomes for students and instructors.
“Together, we are not just developing resources; we are shaping the future of education in our institution; by standardising our course materials, we can ensure consistency in content delivery across all courses, ultimately enhancing the quality of our educational programmes,” he said.
He stressed that the course manuals would improve learning outcomes and provide robust support for instructors. "Our goal is to provide students with a solid foundation for academic success, and we believe that these comprehensive course manuals will play a critical role in achieving this objective," he stated.
Dr. Effrim further emphasised that the course manuals and slides would serve several key purposes: ensuring consistency in content delivery, aligning course materials with the university's goals, and providing strong support for instructors. He encouraged participants to actively engage in discussions, share their valuable experiences, and contribute to the future of General Education Courses.
As the new General Education curriculum is set to be rolled out in January 2025, these tools are essential for educators as they aim to bring the revised syllabus to life. The Department, with significant input from the University Planning Unit and various faculty members, has worked diligently to develop this updated curriculum. With the successful completion of the workshop, UEW is poised to enhance the quality and consistency of its educational programmes, providing students with a solid foundation for academic success.
