UEW Chaplaincy Holds Thanksgiving Ceremony and Transfers Leadership
The University of Education, Winneba (UEW) Chaplaincy on Sunday, 31st August 2025, held the second interdenominational and thanksgiving service for the second semester of the 2024/2025 academic year.
The service, held at the Jophus Anamuah-Mensah Conference Centre was under the theme “But for God.” It also marked the handing over of leadership of the Students’ Chaplaincy Executive Committee.
The outgoing executives, led by Elijah Nyaaba Mba as President, handed over to a new team headed by Courage Yevugah, who now serves as the Students’ Chaplain. Other newly inducted executives include Lesley Sarfo Kantanka as secretary, Saviour Owusu as organiser, Eric Wadjah as Bible Studies Coordinator, Paul Atibilla as Prayer Director, Emmanuella Fosu as Financial Secretary and Anita Ama Aseye as Chief Usherette.
Speaking at the service, Prof. Stephen Jobson Mitchual, Vice-Chancellor, commended students for their commitment to both academic and spiritual growth. He lauded the leadership of the Students’ Representative Council (SRC) and the Graduate Students’ Association of Ghana (GRASAG) for their cooperation with Management and urged the incoming chaplaincy executives to embrace humility and service.
Prof. Mitchual reminded the student body that leadership is about serving others and encouraged them to uphold discipline in their academic work, stressing the need to register for courses on time, attend lectures and ensure records are accurate to avoid challenges at graduation. The Vice-Chancellor assured students of Management’s continuous commitment to transforming the University with the resources available, adding that knowledge must be balanced with character to produce graduates of integrity.
Delivering the sermon, Aps. Anthony Kwesi Mensah, representative of the Chairman of The Church of Pentecost, highlighted the theme “But for God” as a reminder of God’s gracious intervention in human life. Drawing from Ephesians 2 and Acts 16, he emphasised that it is only by God’s mercy and grace that lives are preserved and transformed. He encouraged the University community to remain confident in God’s plan, declaring that their presence at UEW was not accidental but part of God’s divine purpose.
Aps. Ebenezer Hagan, the Director of Youth Ministry for The Church of Pentecost, conveyed cordial greetings from the Chairman of the Church, Apostle Eric Nyamekye, who was unable to attend the service due to his international commitments. He expressed assurances to the Vice-Chancellor and the entire university community regarding the Chairman’s ongoing prayers and support for the growth and spiritual well-being of the UEW.
In his acceptance speech, the new Students’ Chaplain, Courage Yevugah, pledged to lead with humility and service, in line with the example of Christ. He called for unity among Christian denominations on campus and appealled to student leaders and the wider community not to abandon the chaplaincy but to support its mandate of discipleship and evangelism.
Elijah Nyaaba Mba, outgoing Chaplaincy President, in his farewell message, expressed gratitude for the support he received during his tenure. He encouraged the new leadership to sustain the chaplaincy as a beacon of unity and urged students to pursue spiritual growth alongside academic excellence. He also extended best wishes to the student body as they prepared for their end-of-semester examinations.
The service, officiated by Rev. Dr. Joseph Nana Annan, University Chaplain, brought together faculty members, denominational patrons, student leaders and members of the University community who joined in thanksgiving to God for His guidance and provision throughout the semester.
