Biography
Prof. Emma Sarah Eshun is a Professor of Language in the Department of Basic Education at the University of Education, Winneba, in Ghana. She is a language consultant and a professional teacher trainer in English language and Linguistics. She has extensive experience in the teaching and learning of English Language, linguistics, language and literacy development of the child both at the undergraduate and post-graduate levels as well as in Bilingual instructional pedagogies. Emma holds Doctor of Philosophy in Linguistics from the University of Ghana, Master of Philosophy in Applied Linguistics and Bachelor of Education in English Language, all from the University of Education, Winneba-Ghana.
Professor Eshun is the Deputy Director, Quality Assurance Directorate of University of Education, Winneba (UEW). Emma has been the Post-graduate Programmes Coordinator for the Institute for Teacher Education and Continuing Professional Development (ITECPD), the Coordinator for Gender Equality and Social Inclusion for the fifteen (15) Colleges of Education affiliated to University of Education, Winneba from 2021-2022. She has also served as the Professional Development Coordinator for the Department of Basic Education. She has over ten years continuous experience in teaching and researching at the University. She has also worked on several research projects and varied committees tasked to design academic programmes as well as working with different team members to develop Colleges of Education Course manuals, literacy resource materials, professional development manuals and Resource Manual for Play Based Learning.
She has rich experience in curriculum development (New B.Ed College of Education Curriculum for Basic schools and Secondary Education Curriculum for SHS). She is currently a reviewer for English Language and Literature Curricula for Secondary Education being developed by the National Council for Curriculum and Assessment (NACCA) of the Ministry of Education, Ghana. Professor Eshun is a writer/editor for course module materials for College of Open and Distance e-Learning (CODeL), University of Education, Winneba as well as a developer of Textbooks for JHS for Ministry of Education. She has been involved in several International, National, and local education development projects and conferences. She has been a lead researcher and engaged in several projects commissioned by various stakeholders of education including Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC), Transforming Teaching Education and Learning (T-TEL), NaCCA, Right to Play (LEGO Foundations), OXFAM and World Vision.
She has over dozen published peer reviewed articles, and 5 book chapters on language pedagogies, language policy of education, technology integration, media literacy in language, literacy development of the child, and teacher education. She also has 15 resource modules and manuals including English Language Textbooks for teaching English Language. Her research interest is in bilingual language pedagogies, language policy of education, media literacy of young learners and general educational issues. Also, in sub-domains of linguistics such as cognitive semantics, sociolinguistics and language in various domains as well as a focus on syntax and special interest in the structure of Mfantse.
Professor Emma Sarah Eshun has experience in supervising students’ educational research projects and thesis in the University for both undergraduate and post-graduate students. She is also an external thesis examiner for University of Cape Coast and accreditation assessor for GTEC. She has facilitated several subject based (English Language) workshops, Test Item Writing and Construction Workshops for West African Examinations Council and Tutors of Affiliated Colleges of Education for University of Education and Gender Equality and Social Inclusion seminars. Emma has knowledge and experiences on various virtual teaching platforms.
