Mental Health Training for Hall Assistants

In a proactive move to enhance student welfare and safety within campus residences, the University Counselling Centre is organising a specialised Mental Health Training Programme for all Hall Assistants.

This initiative is a collaborative effort between the University Counselling Centre, the Division of Human Resource, and the Management of Halls of Residence. Recognising that Hall Assistants are often the first point of contact for students in distress, the programme seeks to equip them with the critical skills needed to manage complex emotional and medical situations effectively.

Comprehensive Training Curriculum

The session will be facilitated by professional counsellors from the University Counselling Centre. The curriculum is carefully designed to bridge the gap between early observation and professional intervention, with emphasis on the following areas:

  • Mental Health Awareness: Understanding the common psychological challenges faced by today’s student population.
  • Identification of Concerns: Recognising early warning signs of emotional distress and behavioural changes.
  • Supportive Response: Developing the interpersonal skills required to provide immediate, empathetic, and non-judgemental support.
  • Referral Pathways: Understanding the appropriate internal procedures for referring students to professional support services promptly and efficiently.
  • Emergency Care: Acquiring essential skills for responding to basic medical emergencies within the halls of residence.

Event Details

All Hall Assistants are expected to attend the session to promote a coordinated and consistent approach to student care across all residences.
