Academic Experience and Impact

Since

The Faculty is grounded in an interdisciplinary approach that integrates Liberal Studies, Social Studies, Religion and Peace Education. We equip students not only with subject knowledge but also with the theoretical and methodological tools needed to critically examine social issues, interpret human experiences and contribute meaningfully to national and global development.

Our impact extends across the University through the delivery of African Studies and Liberal Studies, enriching the academic experience of students from all disciplines while promoting critical thinking, cultural awareness and shared responsibility for societal progress.

Beyond the University, we are committed to community engagement. Through outreach initiatives, we provide learning opportunities to the wider public, ensuring that knowledge remains accessible and relevant. Staff are actively encouraged to apply their expertise in real-world contexts, strengthening both professional practice and community impact.

Research within the Faculty is purposeful and socially responsive. We address critical issues such as ethics, identity, conflict resolution and human rights. This generates knowledge that informs policy, enhances teaching and contributes to more inclusive and peaceful societies. Teaching, research and community service are not separate activities—they are integrated commitments.

Students undertake guided research projects that build their ability to ask critical questions, analyse evidence and communicate well-reasoned arguments. These experiences foster intellectual independence and prepare them for diverse career pathways.

Through internships and industrial attachments, students gain practical experience, engage with real-world challenges, and build professional networks that support their transition into the workforce.

Our academic environment is enriched by seminars, workshops and interactive engagements with industry professionals, researchers and thought leaders. Fieldwork, case studies and project-based learning further deepen students’ understanding and strengthen their problem-solving skills.

The Faculty is rooted in an interdisciplinary approach that integrates liberal studies, social studies, religion, and peace education. We equip students not only with subject knowledge but also with the theoretical insights and methodological skills needed to critically examine social issues, interpret human experiences, and contribute meaningfully to national and global development. From analysing belief systems to exploring conflict, human rights, and peacebuilding, our programmes are designed to produce thoughtful, informed, and responsible graduates.

Our impact extends across the university through the delivery of Africa Studies and Liberal Studies programmes, enriching the academic journey of students from all disciplines. In doing so, we promote critical thinking, cultural awareness, and a shared commitment to societal progress. We are equally committed to serving beyond the university. Through outreach initiatives, we provide teaching and learning opportunities to the wider public, ensuring that knowledge is accessible and relevant to community needs. Our department actively supports staff engagement in community service, creating opportunities for them to apply their expertise in real-world contexts while strengthening their professional practice.

Research within the department is purposeful and socially responsive. We engage with critical issues such as ethics, identity, conflict resolution, and human rights, generating knowledge that informs policy, enriches teaching, and contributes to building more peaceful and inclusive societies. In our departments, teaching, research, and community service are not separate pursuits-they are interconnected commitments. Research is an essential part of our training. Students undertake guided research projects that develop their ability to ask relevant questions, analyse evidence, and communicate well-reasoned arguments. This process strengthens their intellectual independence and equips them with skills that are valuable across diverse career paths. Beyond academic and professional development, our students are actively involved in community service initiatives. These activities provide opportunities to apply knowledge in meaningful ways, respond to societal needs, and cultivate a strong sense of responsibility and leadership. Together, they define who we are: a community dedicated to knowledge, service, and impact.

Through internships and attachments, students move beyond theory into professional spaces where they engage with real responsibilities, solve practical problems, and build networks that shape their future careers. These experiences provide a clear understanding of workplace expectations and prepare students to transition confidently into employment.

Our academic environment is enriched by seminars, workshops, and interactive sessions that connect students with industry professionals, researchers, and thought leaders. These engagements stimulate critical thinking, expose students to emerging issues, and encourage them to actively participate in intellectual discussions. We also place strong emphasis on the practical components of our courses. Through fieldwork, case studies, and project-based learning, students engage directly with real-life situations, deepening their understanding and enhancing their problem-solving abilities.

The Faculty is committed to academic rigour, research and community engagement. Prospective students and partners are invited to engage with its programmes and activities.
