About Us

Brief History
The Department of Clothing and Textiles Education was established in August 2020 under the erstwhile Faculty of Home Economics Education, University of Education, Winneba. The Department is dedicated to training competent professional teachers, researchers, and entrepreneurs in the field of Clothing and Textiles through teaching, research, innovation, and community outreach.
The Department addresses a critical national need: the shortage of qualified Clothing and Textiles teachers at the pre-tertiary level, which has limited student interest in the subject. By providing scientifically grounded and practically oriented training, the programme ensures graduates acquire strong competencies in areas such as garment construction, fashion design, pattern making, draping, textile science, clothing technology, apparel production, and product development.
A unique feature of the programme is its strong emphasis on entrepreneurship and innovation. Through courses like Entrepreneurship Education and Mini-Business Projects, students develop business plans, run small-scale ventures alongside their studies, and gain hands-on experience in managing enterprises. This approach produces graduates who are not only job seekers but also job creators, contributing to Ghana’s economic growth and industrial development.
In line with UEW’s mission, the Department also prioritises research and community service. Students engage in applied research and outreach activities that promote sustainable fashion practices, textile innovation, and skills transfer to local communities. Partnerships with industry stakeholders such as Akaas Skills Development Academy and TexStyles Ghana Limited (GTP) provide students with industrial attachments and internship opportunities that strengthen their professional skills.
Graduates of the Department are well-prepared for diverse careers in education, the garment and textile industry, public service, entrepreneurship, and consultancy, while also having a solid foundation for advanced studies at the Master’s and Doctoral levels.
The Department of Clothing and Textiles Education remains committed to fostering creativity, professionalism, and innovation, ensuring that its graduates contribute meaningfully to the transformation of Ghana’s educational sector, fashion and textile sector, and national development.
