SELLL-UEW Launches Cutting-Edge Leadership Programme to Transform Education
The School of Education and Life-Long Learning (SELLL) at the University of Education, Winneba (UEW) has launched an innovative professional programme in education leadership aimed at enhancing the capabilities and performance of leaders in pre-tertiary and tertiary educational institutions.
This one-year programme, known as the Professional Education Leadership Programme (PELP), is structured into three levels. It seeks to prepare both practicing and aspiring educational leaders to excel in their roles.
The PELP is designed to create a sustainable and diverse pipeline of skilled individuals ready to hold leadership positions in Ghana’s educational sector. It caters to all stages of academic leadership, from new leaders and leaders in waiting to current educational leaders.
The programme includes a postgraduate certificate in Professional Education Leadership (PEL) focused on basic education (KG to JHS), a postgraduate diploma in PEL for secondary education leadership, and a master’s in PEL targeting tertiary education leadership.
The programme emphasises hands-on learning and practical assessment, leveraging the expertise of academic professionals and experienced educational leaders, both active and retired, to provide comprehensive, real-world lessons in leadership within Ghanaian educational institutions.
Prof. Victor Antwi, Pro-Vice-Chancellor of UEW and chairman of the event highlighted the necessity of cultivating a diverse pool of 21st-century leaders capable of advancing Ghana’s educational institutions and transforming the nation into a learning hub by 2030. He emphasised that the PELP’s competency-based curriculum would equip graduates with essential skills and competencies for effective leadership.
“Our vision for PELP graduates is that they will have a competitive edge in securing leadership roles in Ghanaian educational institutions. With effective cooperation and perseverance, UEW will continue to prepare leaders for transformative education in Ghana and beyond,” Prof. Antwi stated.
Prof. Ahmed Jinapor Abdulai, Director-General of the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) and keynote speaker, addressed the participants on the theme “Preparing Leaders for Transformative Education: The Role of Universities in Ghana.”
He stressed the urgency of universities playing a transformative role in preparing educational leaders, noting the complexity and significance of the challenges facing the nation.
“We cannot expect new or different results by continuing the same practices. Conducting self-examination and critically assessing our mandates and their fulfillment are crucial for any transformative agenda,” Prof. Abdulai remarked.
The GTEC Director-General reaffirmed the commission’s commitment to ensuring equitable access to relevant and world-class tertiary education.
The event also featured insightful speeches from Prof. Hinneh Kusi, Acting Dean of SELLL; Dr. Samuel Awuku, Principal Technical Adviser at Transforming Teaching Education and Learning (T-TEL); and Madam Justina Djaba, Director in Charge of General Administration at the Ghana Education Service (GES).
This launch marks a significant step in UEW’s ongoing efforts to enhance educational leadership and support the development of capable leaders who will drive transformative change in Ghana’s educational landscape.
