UEW to Host African Linguistics School 2024
The University of Education Winneba in Ghana has been selected among prestigious institutions across Africa to host the African Linguistics School 7 (ALS7), an esteemed two-week institute scheduled for 22nd July to 2nd August, 2024.
This notable event will bring together 71 students from 11 countries and 22 faculty members from across the globe for an intensive exploration of core areas in linguistics.
As the participants of the African Linguistics School 7 (ALS) gears up for the commencement of the two-week institute at UEW, anticipation is building among linguistics enthusiasts from across the globe. ALS7 promises to be a transformative two-week institute, focusing on core areas of linguistics including syntax, semantics, phonology, sociolinguistics, and fieldwork.
This year, a diverse cohort of 71 students has been selected to participate in ALS7 at UEW, representing a range of African nations such as Benin, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Ethiopia, Kenya, Nigeria, South Africa, Sudan, Tanzania, and Togo. Notably, the programme also welcomes students from further afield, including delegates from Germany and the United States. These participants, mainly from African universities, will benefit from an immersive educational experience where all costs, except for a nominal registration fee upon arrival, are covered.
The ALS programme distinguishes itself not only through its comprehensive curriculum but also through its faculty, which comprises an esteemed group of 22 instructors from diverse continents. These faculty members will generously contribute their expertise pro-bono, ensuring that students receive top-tier instruction and mentorship in the field of linguistics.
Over the course of two weeks, students enrolled in ALS7 will engage in intensive coursework, interactive presentations, collaborative projects, and personalised consultations with faculty members. This multifaceted approach not only deepens their understanding of linguistics but also fosters international networks among peers and mentors, creating lasting connections that span continents and disciplines.
The success of ALS7 is being meticulously planned by a dedicated Local Organising Committee, chaired by Dr. Abraham Kwesi Bisilki. The committee includes distinguished members such as Dr. Rogers Krobea Asante, Dr. Gify Appiah-Adjei, Dr. Pascal Kpodo, Dr. Anthony Agoswin, Mr. Shadrack Nkatiah, and Ms. Linda Tera Deh. Their combined efforts and expertise are pivotal in orchestrating an event that promises to be both academically enriching and culturally immersive.
