EDUCATION FOR THE HEARING IMPAIRED – EHI

This specialism prepares and equips student teachers with the fundamentals in the acquisition and use of Sign Language (SL) in teaching Deaf students.

The courses are designed to enable prospective teachers to develop skills needed in tutoring students who are Deaf or hard of hearing in various academic and non-academic subjects at the basic education level.

Students acquire skills in producing audio-visual materials, and develop skills in drawing Individualised Education Programme (IEP) for the learners.

The students will be introduced to basic tools for hearing assessment, types of assessment, ethics, case history approaches, and diagnostic information from audiometric interpretations.

Emphasis will be laid on the strategies, and principles used in making reading accessible and enjoyable to learners who are deaf or hard of hearing.

Supportive services available for the Deaf and hard of hearing in both special and inclusive educational settings will be highlighted.

The courses also include detailed descriptions of language and speech deviations, which can occur in some children, and strategies for addressing them.
