Brief History
The Department of Special Education is one of the five (5) departments of the Faculty of Educational Studies (FES) of the University of Education, Winneba (UEW).
The Department was set up to train teachers and resource persons to work with students with Special Educational Needs (SEN) in regular, special and inclusive institutions across all the levels of education in Ghana.
There are two broad categories of undergraduate programmes in the Department; that is,
- B.Ed. Special Education
- B.Ed. Community-Based Rehabilitation and Disability Studies (CBRDS)
Under the B.Ed. Special Education, there are three Units/specialisms, namely:
- Education for Individuals with Intellectual Disabilities (EID).
- Education for Individuals with Visual Impairment (EVI); and
- Education for Individuals with Hearing Impairment (EVI).
Students pursuing B.Ed. Special Education are allowed to choose one out of the three units/specialisms at the beginning of the first semester of the first year and to maintain that choice throughout the duration of the programme.
There is also a second subject or minor area option from a second department within the University since Special Education is not a teaching subject.
Community-Based Rehabilitation and Disability Studies (CBRDS) students are exempted from choosing any of the aforementioned specialisms and second subject area.
