EDUCATION FOR THE INTELLECTUALLY DISABLED – EID

Students who specialize in this unit are trained to manage individuals with neurodevelopmental disorders (NDD), especially those with intellectual disabilities (ID).

The courses are therefore designed to provide in-depth knowledge and understanding of what constitutes ID.

The students are also exposed to historical issues that affect these individuals in society globally, etiologic risk factors, characteristics, preventive measures, and other comorbidities associated with ID.

Prospective teachers of children with ID will learn how the human brain develops and how its damage influences the learning processes of children with ID.

Other areas that will be dealt with include developmental assessment of school-age children with NDD, and how to manage challenging behaviours through functional behavioural assessment and intervention.

Students will also be prepared with the basics regarding the identification and management of individuals with learning disabilities, especially reading and writing difficulties.
