IUCDS Enriches Research Skills of PhD Students
The Inter-University Conference for Doctoral Studies (IUCDS) has organised a three-day seminar under the theme “Research Skills Development and Techniques Application, Using Innovations in Learning Technologies for Language Teaching/Learning and Research” for doctoral students of Sister Institutions.
The IUCDS organised the seminar in collaboration with the College of Languages Education, the Faculty of Foreign Languages Education, the Faculty of Ghanaian Languages Education, the School of Communication and Media Studies, and the School of Graduate Studies all of the University of Education, Winneba (UEW).
The seminar, which was held from Tuesday, January 18 to Thursday, January 20, 2022 at the North Campus Mini-Conference Room, UEW, broadened participants' knowledge on the importance of innovations in learning technologies to research works and the dissemination of research findings.
Participants were trained on contemporary approaches in the usage of PowerPoint to present content-oriented grammar/literary texts and the usage of Zoom, WhatsApp and related tools in teaching/learning to present content-oriented grammar/texts.
Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) students were taught how to pull texts off the World Wide Web to introduce themes and empower students by giving them access to a wide range of web-based tools that allow them to publish works online and engage a live audience in real contexts.
Other topics participants were taken through included research design and methodology, comparative study of the different methods of data collection and guidelines for constructing questionnaire/tests items and interviews in Language Sciences; techniques for preparation towards data collection, processing, analysis and interpretation in Language Sciences; sampling fundamentals about the theory of estimation and statistical inferences in Language Sciences; and publication of main findings and dissemination of knowledge.
The resource persons held practical and interactive sessions with the PhD students, who presented their research proposals for expert analysis.
The Ag. Vice-Chancellor of UEW, Prof. Andy Ofori-Birikorang, in his welcome address at the opening of the three-day seminar, re-emphasised the importance of fostering partnership with sister universities within and outside of Ghana particularly, in the West African sub-region to preserve the academic interest of students in doctoral programmes.
The Principal, College of Languages Education, UEW and Chairman for the event, Prof. Dominic Kwaku Danso Mensah, was thankful to members of the Conference especially, the Executive Secretary, Prof. D. S. Y. Amuzu and the Head of the Scientific Unit, Prof. A. M. Ilupeju, for their leadership qualities and the role of the Conference in promoting quality teaching and research by harmonising resources for staff development in all partner institutions.
Prof. Amuzu made an overview presentation on activities of IUCDS; Prof. Ilupeju summarised activities of the Journal of IUCDS; whereas Prof George Kankam, the Dean of School of Graduate Studies, UEW, appraised doctoral studies programmes at the UEW.
The IUCDS is an Academic Board and Partnership Framework composed of Sister Institutions in Ghana and in the West African sub-region – public and private universities and institutions, located in Ghana, Togo, Nigeria, Cote d’Ivoire and Burkina Faso.
