The Department of Special Education (SPED) of the Faculty of Educational Studies (FES), University of Education, Winneba (UEW), has donated Appropriate Paper-Based Technology (APT) equipment to the Orthopedic Unit of the Trauma and Specialists Hospital in Winneba.

The Department donated two standing frames and an adapted seat/chair to the hospital.

The donation, which took place on Monday, 26th June, 2023, at the Orthopedic Centre of the hospital, was driven by the Department’s civic responsibility to address community needs, support vulnerable populations, and improve the overall well-being of society. This is targeted at fostering positive social change, promoting empathy, and building stronger communities.

The APT devices were made by students from the Community-Based Rehabilitation and Disability Studies (CBRDS) Unit of SPED. The students used makeshift materials within the locality in moulding the devices, as part of their coursework on appropriate technology and assistive devices for persons with disabilities.

The course aims at empowering students to gain new skills, knowledge, and experiences, fostering their personal development, and broadening their perspectives about ways of meeting the unique needs of children with special needs and abilities. It was also geared towards providing opportunities for the students to meet and collaborate with like-minded individuals, establish connections, and build social networks that would enhance their prospects in the job market.

Present at the occasion were the Head of SPED, Mrs. Florence Akua Mensah; the Coordinator of CBRDS, Prof. John Oyundoyin; Miss Rabbi Abu-Sadat, Mrs. Priscilla Deede Hammond, Mrs. Joyce Tsatsu, Mrs. Hajara Salifu, and five second year students from the CBRDS Unit, some of whom are the manufacturers of the donated technological devices.
