Postgraduate 3 years Regular/Full Time Direct

Description

The Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Applied Linguistics was started in the 2005/2006 academic year. The primary aim was offer students with relevant skills, knowledge and competencies in language and linguistics in response to the growing need for researchers to be trained to investigate issues of language and linguistics across Ghana and the world. The programme was started with mostly females due to availability of funding from a gender sensitive source. With the directive that all universities in Ghana must employ Ph.D. holders to teach and coupled with the freeze on scholarship for faculty to study overseas, this programme helps in training and producing the much needed human resource for Ghana’s private and public universities. The programme is also intended to upgrade the teaching staff at UEW and the Colleges of Education by providing lecturers and tutors with requisite knowledge and skills in order to contribute to the teaching of language at those levels of education in the country. Since its establishment, 10 students have graduated, four of whom were from Mali. These graduates have taken up appointments in various institutions in Ghana and Mali. In fact, the first PhD graduate from the University of Education, Winneba graduated from this programme.
