Description

The Master of Philosophy (M.Phil.) in Applied Linguistics programme was established in 2003, with most students being females, under a special sponsorship programme by the Carnegie Corporation. The M.Phil. programme was the first post-graduate programme to be established in the University of Education, Winneba. At the time of establishment, the University of Education was awarding only bachelor level degrees. It was therefore envisaged that a programme of this nature will equip graduates of language and linguistics with the requisite skills, experience, and knowledge. Its main focus was to prepare staff of the Faculty to train teachers for Basic and Senior High Schools. More recently, due to changes in the employment of universities, the focus of the programme has shifted to training teachers for the Colleges of Education and to preparing graduates who will further their education to obtain terminal degrees, especially doctor of philosophy (PhD). Since its inception, about 70 people have graduated from the programme. Most of these graduates teach in the Colleges of Education. Some also teach in public and private universities while the rest teach in pre-tertiary institutions in Ghana.
