M.ED IN TEACHING ENGLISH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE (TESL)
Description
The Master of Education (M.Ed.) programme was established in the 2004-2005 academic year to prepare teachers for the basic and senior high school levels. At the time of its establishment, the University of Education, Winneba (UEW) was awarding only bachelor level degrees with a pedagogy focus. It was therefore envisaged that such a programme will offer English language teachers an opportunity to enhance their knowledge, skills, and performance through further training at the Masters’ Level. Such training can only be useful if teaching becomes the central focus. In the course of the programme being ran, some courses have been reviewed in tune with the changing times so that students can benefit immensely from the programme. For instance, some courses have had more topics added to them while others have been divided in order for the lecturers to focus on individual courses, rather than sometimes teaching two courses as one course, thereby concentrating more on the topics they are comfortable in and neglecting other topics. A lot of teachers of English have graduated from the programme since its inception.
