UEW Lecturer Joins Organising Team for FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022
A lecturer at the Department of Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Sports (HPERS), University of Education, Winneba (UEW), Dr. Ernest Yeboah Acheampong, has been selected as part of the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 Volunteer Team to support in delivering a successful and historic first ever World Cup to be hosted in the Middle East.
The tournament kicks off from Sunday, 20th November, 2022, to Sunday, 18th December, 2022. It is being held for the first time outside the usual June-July window because of Qatar's intense summer heat and humidity.
As a Media Operations Volunteer, Dr. Acheampong, will play a key role during the event to among others ensure the smooth running of media-related operations. This includes ensuring that accredited media (journalists and photographers) are provided with the services and facilities necessary to enable them perform their roles effectively, per the FIFA World Cup media operations requirements and top-notched services.
The Media Volunteers will be working in various media areas such as the Media Service Desk, Stadium Media Centre, Media Tribune, Photo Positions (Pitch), Mixed Zone and Press Conference Room to link each of these areas to ensure a comprehensive production and coverage of the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 to teeming football fans across the globe.
Dr. Acheampong will be among some 20,000 Volunteers selected from 420,000 applicants. The Supreme Committee for the Delivery and Legacy of the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 would be relying on the Media Operations Volunteer Team to monitor the smooth operations of key media services, like Media Transport, Accommodation, Catering and provide the most updated information to the Media to deliver with passion and dedication a successful tournament.
Dr. Acheampong together with 22 other Ghanaians is among 3,000 international volunteers out of 20,000 recruited by FIFA for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
The lecturer previously worked as a Media Operations Volunteer during the African Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2008. He has been an Africa Coordinator for Sports Against Racism Ireland (SARI) based in Dublin since 2011. Dr. Acheampong also worked as a Volunteer football coach with the U-19 male city team of FC Seyssins in Grenoble, France.
