UEW-HPERS Receives Recreation and Leisure Books from Philanthropist
The Department of Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Sports (HPERS), University of Education, Winneba (UEW), has received recreation and leisure books from a retired professor, Prof. Paul Ankomah, from the North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University in the USA.
Prof. Ankoma bequeathed the books to HPERS Department on Friday, 12th August, 2022, at his residence in East Legon, Accra, Ghana, to supplement its new Master of Philosophy programme in Physical Education (PE) and Sports Studies, Leisure and Recreation option.
Prof. Ankoma revealed that he decided to donate the books to the UEW-HPERS because he wanted a programme that would use them instead of just keeping them in the library.
“This is just my token contribution to education in Ghana. I expect that these books will be put to good use and it will give me the delight to know that somebody somewhere in Ghana is benefiting from them,” he said.
Receiving the books on behalf of the University, the Head of Department, HPERS, Mr. Munkaila Seibu, expressed gratitude to the Fulbright Scholar for his kind gesture.
"We believe that this donation arrived at a perfect time. We've started an MPhil programme in PE and Sports Studies, and it's difficult to find reading material that students may use to supplement the lectures. Therefore, we sincerely appreciate your kind gesture. God bless you so much," he showed appreciation.
Mr. Seibu pledged to ensure that the books are put into good use to help the Department continue to produce students to support the transformation of Ghanaian society and beyond.
A lecturer at HPERS, Dr. Ernest Acheampong, on his part, reiterated how timely the donation was to supplement the Department’s new master’s programme in Leisure and Recreation.
"We were finding it difficult to get materials to support students, especially with their research. So, I believe it has arrived at the right time, and we promise to use it to provide the necessary benefit to students.
"We also promise to take good care of the books so that the next generation of students will also benefit from them. Once again, thank you for the thoughtful gesture. We pray to the almighty God to grant you long life and hope you'll, in the near future, share some of your experiences with our MPhil students," he requested.
