UEW-HPERS Organises Second Hydrotherapy Workshop

The Department of Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Sports (HPERS), University of Education, Winneba (UEW), in collaboration with the Ghana Footvolley Association and Beit Issie Shapiro, has held its second hydrotherapy course for civil servants and members of the armed forces.

The four-day workshop, which took place at the HPERS Gym for the theory sessions and the Sir Charles Beach/Olympic Arena for the practical sessions, from Monday, 21st to Thursday, 24th November, 2022, trained participants to practise the Halliwick concept of hydrotherapy in Ghana.

The President of the Ghana Footvolley Association, Mr. Mustapha Mohammed, in explaining the purpose of the programme, said it was meant to train the first hydrotherapists in Ghana.

In his remarks, Dr. Munkaila Seibu, Head of HPERS, urged participants to give the course their all and to take it seriously.

The Chairman of the Amalgamated Sports Clubs, UEW, Dr. Emmanuel Osei Sarpong, on his part, encouraged the Israeli delegation to continue enhancing their cooperation with the Department to implement exchange programmes.

The facilitators for the four-day workshop were Yael, Ilianet and Roni. They took participants through the history of the Halliwick concept, its importance, the ten-point Halliwick concept programme, as well as upthrust and balance in stillness.  

According to the facilitators, the ten-point Halliwick concept included mental adjustment, disengagement, transversal rotation control, sagittal rotation control, longitudinal rotation control and combined rotation control.

As part of the four-day activities, each day had two sessions: morning classroom lectures between 8:00 am and 12:00 noon and the second session of practical lessons in the pool.

Participants were put in groups of five at the end of each day and given tasks to demonstrate the skills learnt in a manner appropriate for toddlers, kids, adolescents and adults.
