About Us

The Department of Social Studies was established since the inception of University College of Education, Winneba (UCEW) in 1992. During this period the Department ran Diploma and Post- Diploma courses in Social Studies. Later, this programme was upgraded to a degree programme B. Ed (Social Studies). The department also offers a 2 – Year M. Phil. in Social Studies Education (regular) and M. Ed Social Studies (sandwich). Further restructuring and upgrading of all University Programmes has resulted in the development of the current B.A. Social Studies Education (With Economics, Geography, History, Political Science) programme.

Objectives

The objectives of the programme are to equip students with relevant knowledge, skills and attitudes that will enable them to teach Social Studies/Citizenship Education / Civics at the Basic, Secondary and Colleges of Education levels and / or undertake supervisory responsibilities under the District Directorate of Education.

Goals

The programme has been designed to:

• Equip students with relevant knowledge which will form the basis for enquiry into issues and problems of society.
• Develop in students, professional skills and competencies required for teaching Social/Environmental Studies.
• Equip students with research skills used for the collection and analysis of data as well as drawing up necessary conclusions from them.

Mission

The mission of the Department is to equip its graduates with the relevant knowledge, professional skills and instil in them positive attitudes which will enable them to become effective teachers of Social Studies in pre-tertiary institutions. The Department continues to support and pursue the key areas of university enterprise including teaching, research, publication and service to the community.

The Department shall become an outstanding one for Social Studies Education in Ghana and recognized for its leadership role in Africa and beyond.
