UEW Management Bids Farewell to 42 Retirees
The Management of the University of Education, Winneba (UEW), through the Division of Human Resource, has hosted 42 retirees, who have contributed in diverse ways to the growth of the university, to a send-off party.
The ceremony was held at the Jophus Anamuah-Mensah Conference Centre Car Park, North Campus, UEW, on Friday, 23rd September, 2022.
The Dean, Faculty of Science Education, Prof. Victor Antwi, who chaired the occasion on behalf of the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Mawutor Avoke, expressed gratitude to the retirees for their immense contributions to the development of UEW.
"We will want you to take pleasure in your well-earned retirement because you have done your part. Your efforts have unquestionably changed this university for the better. We are grateful that you brought such happiness and dedication to us here on campus. The Vice-Chancellor wishes you a happy retirement and a fantastic future with your family, friends, and loved ones," he stated.
Prof. Antwi urged the retirees to continue to assist the university even in retirement. "Don't leave us entirely to ourselves, the Vice-Chancellor advises. Come to us occasionally to assist. Come and share some of your experiences with us to help this university grow and improve."
The representative of the Ag. Registrar, Mr. Alexander W. Essah, Registrar, College of Languages Education, Ajumako Campus, recounted the humble genesis of UEW and its tremendous progress thus far.
“Today is both a joyful and a sad day, but I’ll emphasise the joyful side today. We have come a long way through your selfless services. I recall that Professor Nathaniel Kofi Pecku, who served as the university's then-Principal, drove the sole car the university proudly owned at the time. The university now has a wide range of vehicles.
"Look at the buildings. You and I both worked hard to get UEW where it is today, and we must be proud of our contributions. You spend most of your days in the office creating programmes and strategies to advance the then College, which began with approximately five faculties,” he said.
A pioneer retiree and convener of the UEW Retirees Association, Mr. Issahaku Alhassan, disclosed that after eight years of advocating for the creation of a retirees association so that members could support one another, the initiative was finally getting the attention it required. He pointed out that the association had already held two meetings since May and that its upcoming gathering would see the election of executives. He took advantage of the occasion to extend an association-wide welcome to all 2022 retirees.
"Our association was created to encourage camaraderie among us. We wish to keep our connections with our employer strong and make it possible for retirees to participate in the operations of this university.
“Additionally, we wish to work for the advantage of all retirees and disseminate information on topics of relevance, particularly our pension and health benefits. Within the limits of our resources, we also aim to encourage everyone to participate in society positively while having fun because it’s important for our aging bodies,” he remarked.
Mr. Alhassan implored retirees to make time to exercise and care for their bodies. He also entreated them to adhere to the doctor's advice and take their prescribed drugs.
Prof. Francis Owusu Mensah expressed gratitude to the Management and staff, on behalf of his fellow retirees, for recognising their hard work and bringing them together to celebrate it. He also urged retirees to remember how their affiliation to the university had led to significant achievements.
"That alone is enough and we appreciate that. I know many of you have retired, but you are not tired. When it becomes possible for you to contribute to the growth of the university even while on retirement, we expect you to do that wholeheartedly so that the university will continue to grow from strength to strength," he averred.
The University provided each retiree with a citation and assorted electrical appliances as part of their retirement packages. Associations on campus, such as the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG), Ghana Association of University Administrators (GAUA), Senior Staff Association – Universities of Ghana (SSA-UoG), Teachers and Educational Workers Union (TEWU-GH), and Regifund also presented gifts to retiring members.
The members retiring from the service of the university for the year 2022 are Prof. Francis Owusu Mensah (28 years), Prof. Samuel Kwesi Asiedu-Addo (25 years), Mr. Alvin Kwesi Andoh (25 years), Dr. Seth Peter Frimpong (23 years), Mr. Peter Kwegyir-Aggrey (22 years), Mr. Cletus Kolog Ngaaso (24 years), Dr. Theophilus Edward Richardson (nine years), Dr. Thomas Andzie-Quainoo Tawiah (22), Dr. Hans Kweku Wiabo Baffoe (24 years), Mrs. Elizabeth Lani Ashong (23 years), Mr. Eric Ofosu-Dwamena (15 years), Mr. Viscount Buer Nortey Buer (28 years), Mr. Richard Bampoh-Addo (21 years) and Mr. Richmond Sam Quarm (nine years)
The rest are Mr. Kofi Asafo-Adjei (25 years), Mr. Francis Teye (22 years), Ms. Georgina Afeafa Sapaty (17 years), Dr. Salome Praise Otami (17 years), Dr. Millicent Akosua Quarcoo (three years), Mr. Victor Quaye Sowah (10 years), Ms. Helen Tsey (13 years), Mrs. Veronica Ohenewaa Techie Ghartey (28 years), Mr. Samuel Egyir (28 years), Mr. Adongo Akologo (28 years), Mr. John Yeboah (22 years), Mr. Samuel Mensah Ihedigbo (28 years), Ms. Naomi Dennis (28 years), Mr. Joseph Bortsie (11 years), Ms. Mary Otoo (27 years) and Mr. Daniel Kojo Bortsie (26 years).
The others are Mr. Isaac Nkrumah (28 years), Mr. Michael Appoh (12 years), Ms. Margaret Wiredu (24 years), Mr. Patrick Amissah Wonkyi (24 years), Mr. Thomas Bart Addison (26 years), Mr. John Keitu (28 years), Mr. John K.
