Biography
Samuel Akugri Asitanga is a distinguished academic and researcher specializing in Ghanaian Language Studies, with a particular focus on Kusaal education and literary advancement. His expertise in Kusaal linguistics, especially in dialectology, has enabled him to explore phonological and morphological variations across Kusaal dialects, making significant contributions to academic research and language development.
Mr. Asitanga's academic journey began with a Bachelor of Arts in Ghanaian Language Studies (Kusaal with German Education) from the University of Education, Winneba (UEW), where he also earned an M.Phil. in Ghanaian Language Studies. His M.Phil. thesis focused on the phonological and lexical analysis of dialect variation in Kusaal, showcasing his commitment to preserving and advancing indigenous languages. Currently, he is pursuing a Ph.D. at UEW, where his research delves deeper into Kusaal education and linguistics.
Professionally, Mr. Asitanga has held diverse roles, including Assistant Lecturer at UEW, English Language Teacher at Bisease Senior High School, and positions with organizations such as the World Food Program, World Insurance Company and USAID. His broad expertise spans teaching, research, translation, transcription, and annotation, reflecting his dedication to linguistics and community development.
Mr. Asitanga has published influential works, including: Phonological variation in Kusaal: A synchronic dialectological study, A structural analysis of personal names in Kusaal, Names of seasons as expressions of climatic conditions and agrarian practices in Kusaal.
He has also presented his research papers at esteemed conferences such as the Annual Conference on African Linguistics (ACAL), the African Linguistic School (ALS), and the Linguistics Association of Ghana (LAG).
Mr. Asitanga is the recipient of several prestigious awards, including the Summer School Scholarship from the African Linguistics School, a Scholarship Award from the Tertiary Education Scholarship Trust Fund (TEST) for Ghana, and multiple citations for academic excellence from the National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS).
Beyond academia, he has exhibited strong leadership skills, leading research teams during fieldwork and serving as a Quality Control Supervisor (QCS) for multiple USAID projects. Additionally, he has demonstrated a commitment to community leadership as the Youth President of the Love A/G Church in Timonde for many years, and being the Financial Secretary to the Kusaasi Students’ Union during his undergrade studies at UEW.
An expert in facilitation, translation, and interpretation, Mr. Asitanga continues to inspire positive change in Ghana and beyond through his work in linguistics, education, and community development.
