Description

The programme seeks to provide:

» Quality Chemistry Education teachers who will be recognised nationally and internationally for their efficiency in producing excellent chemistry teaching in schools.

» Help students to appreciate the beauty of chemistry in explaining nature.

» Opportunities for students to develop their unique pedagogical content knowledge (PCKs).

» A conducive atmosphere for interaction between recognized science educationists in order to produce excellent chemistry educators.

Objectives of the programme

The Chemistry Education programme objectives are to:

» Prepare teachers adequately to teach Chemistry up to the SHS level in Ghana.

» Train students to teach chemistry as their minor areas up to SHS level.

» Provide an enabling environment for students to undertake practical activities that will enhance their understanding of concepts in science, especially in chemistry teaching.

» Help students to organise their creative knowledge, practical skills and research abilities to design teaching and learning materials for use in teaching in the secondary schools.

» Provide opportunities for students to engage in academic and educational research that will help to promote chemistry education in Ghana and elsewhere.

Entry Requirement

Senior High School Certificate Holders

The applicant must have:

A. WASSCE Candidates

 The applicant must have:

• credit passes (A1-C6) in six (6) subjects comprising three (3) core subjects, including English Language, Mathematics and Integrated Science, and

• Credit passes (A1-C6) in Chemistry and any two of the following subjects: Physics, Biology and Elective Mathematics).

B. SSSCE Candidates

The applicant must have:

• Credit passes (A-D) in six (6) subjects comprising three (3) core subjects including three (3) core subjects: English Language, Mathematics and Integrated Science

• Credit passes (A-D) in Chemistry and any two of the following: Physics, Biology and Elective Mathematics).

C. Mature Candidates

The applicant must:

• be at least 25 years of age by 1stSeptember of application.

• Hold Teacher’s Certificate ‘A’ or a SHS Certificate

• Pass the University’s Entrance Examination for the year in question.

D. Holders of relevant Diploma

The applicant must:

• possess a Higher National Diploma or its equivalent in a relevant subject

• from a recognized institution.

• Pass the University’s Interview.

NOTE: Successful candidates will be placed at Level 200 of the 4-Year Degree Programme.

A. School Certificate/GCE Holders

The applicant must:

• possess five (5) credits at GCE ‘O’ Level including English Language, Mathematics and pure science subjects.

• an ‘A’ Level pass lower D in Chemistry plus two (2) others in Biology, Physics and Elective Mathematics.

NOTE: Applicants with ‘A’ Level or ‘O’ Level results more than five (5) years old should apply as mature applicants
