UEW Management Meets Family of Late First Principal, Prof. Pecku

Management of the University of Education, Winneba (UEW), has met with the family of the late Prof. Nathaniel Kofi Pecku, the first substantive principal of the then University College of Education, Winneba (UCEW).

The meeting, held at the University’s Council Chamber, served as a formal notification of his passing and an opportunity to discuss arrangements for his funeral.

The family delegation was led by Prof. George Kankam, son of the late Prof. Pecku. In his opening remarks, Prof. Kankam explained that the family had come to officially inform the University of the passing of its first substantive principal and to outline the plans for the funeral rites.

He emphasised that, in keeping with tradition, the family considered it important to visit the University and pay formal respect to an institution that had played a major role in Prof. Pecku’s professional life. He also introduced the members of the delegation, which included Mrs. Theresa Laryea, daughter of the deceased, and other relatives who accompanied them.

Welcoming the delegation, Mrs. Ekua Abedi-Boafo, Registrar of UEW, extended the University’s condolences and reaffirmed its commitment to supporting the family throughout the funeral period. She highlighted the late Prof. Pecku’s enduring relationship with the institution, noting that his dedication and involvement had continued long after his tenure as principal.

Mrs. Ekua Abedi-Boafo assured the family that the University, through its Publications and Communication Division, would liaise with them to prepare an official tribute and coordinate all necessary institutional support for the funeral.

Representing the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Esther Yeboah Danso-Wiredu, Pro-Vice-Chancellor, commended Prof. Pecku’s pioneering role in the establishment of the University. She reflected on his sacrifices during the institution’s formative years and acknowledged his significant influence in laying the foundation for what has now become one of Ghana’s foremost centres of teacher education.

Dr. Theophilus Senyo Akorlie, Finance Officer, added his tribute, describing Prof. Pecku’s passing as a great loss to both the University community and those who knew him personally. He expressed the institution’s continued commitment to offering its full support to the bereaved family.

Providing details of the funeral, Mrs. Theresa Laryea informed management that the pre-burial and main funeral service would be held on Friday, 28th November, 2025, at the Mount Zion Methodist Church, Sakumono. The pre-burial service will begin at 7:00 am, followed by the main service from 9:00 am to 11:00 am, after which the burial will take place in Ada on the same day. The family also announced that the attire for the ceremony would be all white, and tributes are to be submitted by 14th November, 2025.

The late Prof. Nathaniel Kofi Pecku is fondly remembered as a visionary leader whose dedication, service, and pioneering spirit were instrumental in shaping the University of Education, Winneba, into a leading institution for teacher training in Ghana.
