UEW Management Engages Prominent Stakeholders in Accra

The University of Education, Winneba (UEW) Management has recently embarked on a mission to introduce the newly appointed Vice-Chancellor (VC), Prof. Stephen Jobson Mitchual, to key stakeholders at separate meetings in Accra.

The high-profile visit included meetings with the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC), the regulatory body overseeing tertiary education in Ghana; the Member of Parliament (MP) for Effutu Constituency, Hon. Alexander Afenyo-Markin, in whose constituency the university operates; second Principal of the then University College of Education, Winneba (UCEW), Prof. Nathaniel Kofi Pecku; and the leadership of the Assemblies of God (AG) Church, Ghana, where the VC fellowships.

The Acting Registrar of UEW, Mrs. Wilhelmina Tete-Mensah, during the meetings, emphasised the importance of Prof. Mitchual striking formal acquaintance with major stakeholders. 

The Acting Director-General of GTEC, Prof. Ahmed Jinapor Abdulai, a proud product of UEW along with his deputy, Prof. Yayra Dzakadzie, acknowledged the pivotal role UEW plays in shaping Ghana's tertiary education landscape. He urged UEW Management to maintain an exemplary standard, asserting that other universities should look to UEW for accreditation, the establishment of study centres, and adherence to regulations within the tertiary educational sector.

In an exciting revelation, Prof. Abdulai announced the successful accreditation of a previously questioned programme in Environmental Studies, commending the university for its commitment to quality education.

Hon. Alexander Afenyo-Markin, MP for Effutu Constituency, for his part, passionately urged the UEW, to embrace a spirit of collaboration with the local community for mutual improvement and development. He encouraged UEW to forge meaningful partnerships with the Effutu Municipality, leveraging the university's intellectual and resourceful capacities to address community needs.

Highlighting the transformative potential of such collaborations, Hon. Afenyo-Markin underscored the importance of UEW becoming a catalyst for positive change, fostering a symbiotic relationship between the institution and its local community.

Hon. Afenyo-Markin encouraged UEW Management to foster staff cohesion and embrace diverse opinions within the university community.

In a moment of heartfelt appreciation, Prof. Nathaniel Kofi Pecku, the second Principal of the UCEW, expressed profound gratitude towards the University Management. With a tone of gratitude resonating through his words, Prof. Pecku acknowledged the rarity of such thoughtful gestures, emphasising that some individuals, once they venture beyond familiar grounds, become elusive and gradually fade from sight.

 "We thank you very much that you had even thought of us because others get somewhere and get lost. Nobody sees them again simply because they have left the base," he remarked, highlighting the significance of maintaining connections with one's roots.

The General Superintendent of the AG Church, Ghana, Rev. Dr. Stephen Wengam, taking his turn expressed delight at Prof. Mitchual's appointment and commended him for maintaining a connection to his spiritual roots. He reminded the new Vice-Chancellor of the importance of faith and pledged the General Council's prayers and support.

Responding to the encouraging words, Prof. Mitchual expressed his dedication to justice and fairness. He pledged to work with his Management team to promote unity among staff members, emphasising the significance of a peaceful workplace for the university community and the Effutu Municipality.

The University Management team and the Chancellor of the university, Neenyi Ghartey VII, were present at the various meetings.

As UEW enters a new chapter with Prof. Mitchual at the helm, the collaborative spirit and commitment to excellence demonstrated in these meetings set a promising tone for the future of education in Ghana and sub-Saharan Africa.
