CIP and ODSA Empower International Students with Pre-Academic Orientation
In a concerted effort to ensure a smooth transition for international students, the Centre for International Programmes (CIP) and the Office of the Dean of Student Affairs (ODSA) organised a comprehensive Pre-Academic Orientation Programme (IPOP) for students from Germany and Liberia.
The day-long orientation, held on Monday, 19th February, 2024, at the Student Centre Seminar Room III on the North Campus of the University of Education, Winneba (UEW), aimed to equip these students with the essential knowledge to thrive in their new academic environment.
Dr. (Mrs.) Edinam Kakra Avoke, the Dean of Student Affairs, extended a warm welcome to the visiting students, emphasising the importance of such orientations in facilitating their integration into the university community. "Moving from another country to come and study in a country that you have probably not visited before can be a daunting task," she acknowledged. "The essence of this orientation exercise is to facilitate your entry into our community."
In his opening remarks, Prof. Charles K. Assuah, the Dean of CIP, highlighted UEW's commitment to global collaboration in its pursuit of becoming a renowned institution for teacher education and research. "As international students, you stand to benefit greatly from this type of partnership," he emphasised.
During the sessions, Assistant Registrar Mr. Kizito Kofi Etsibah Ackom provided an overview of UEW, discussing its core values, vision, and mission, while also familiarising the students with university traditions such as the singing of the UEW anthem. Representatives from the Effutu Municipal Immigration Office elucidated Ghanaian immigration regulations, ensuring students were well-informed and compliant.
Ms. Pearl Joan Korkuvi, Assistant University Librarian, highlighted UEW's commitment to providing academic resources and a conducive learning environment. She guided students through accessing essential resources via the university website. Mrs. Christiana Ammah, a Senior Lecturer at the Department of Counseling Psychology, introduced the DIVE (Describe, Interpret, Verify, and Evaluate) model as a coping mechanism for cultural shock, offering practical advice for navigating cross-cultural scenarios.
The event culminated with Mr. Stephen Ernest Donkor, Director of the Directorate of Security Services at UEW, delivering crucial insights on personal security and safety. Mr. Donkor underscored the importance of vigilance, urging students to prioritise their safety and providing practical tips for mitigating risks.
Through collaborative efforts and informative sessions, the orientation equipped international students with the necessary tools to navigate their academic journey at UEW confidently. As they embark on this new chapter, they are poised to thrive in their academic pursuits while embracing the rich cultural tapestry of their host institution.
