Brief History

Family Life Management Education Department had been a unit under the then Department of Home Economics Education until August 2020 when its status changed under the then Faculty of Home Economics Education. Currently, the Family Life Management Education Department together with other departments were realigned with other science biased departments and rename as Faculty of Health, Allied Sciences and Home Economics Education.

Considering the rationale of Free Senior High School programme, as well as the TVET policy, there is the belief that these initiatives are key to country’s industrialization agenda since they will help provide the manpower for practical skills necessary for the nation’s industrial drive.

It was therefore anticipated that enrollment numbers would increase so would the number of qualified applicants desiring to upgrade their knowledge, skills and other competencies in tertiary educational institutes. It became necessary for tertiary institutions to expand their programmes and incorporates relevant marketable competencies that would meet the varied needs of these young citizens in achieving the educational goals of our nation. Thus the Department of Family Life Education was borne. Its main focus is to produce professional teachers through teaching, research and community engagements. In addition, there is the need to provide young people with the skills that will make them manage and enhance their livelihood, be employable and employ others, and to create and sustain wealth to help national growth and development.  Specifically, our courses are structured to build competencies and provide services that would enhance human well-being by managing resources to meet basic and complex needs of all people, particularly focusing on those who are vulnerable, oppressed, and living in poverty through transformational leadership.

Hence, the Department of Family Life Management Education offers a curriculum that allows experienced based learning.  The models adopted engage students in hands-on experiences and reflections. Our students are able to connect theories and knowledge learned in the classroom to real-world situations.
