UEW Receives Donation from UEWCCU to Support Research and Innovation

The University of Education, Winneba (UEW), has been significantly strengthened in its public lecture series through a generous donation of GH₵30,000 from the UEW Cooperative Credit Union (UEWCCU).

This contribution, the first institutional support of its kind for this lecture series, which coincides with UEWCCU's 30th anniversary, underscores the deepening collaboration between the university and the Cooperative Credit Union in advancing research and innovation.

The official presentation came off at the Council Chamber, North Campus, Winneba, on Tuesday, 13th August, 2024, marking a significant moment in the ongoing partnership between UEW and UEWCCU.

Prof. Stephen Jobson Mitchual, Vice-Chancellor of UEW, expressed deep gratitude to UEWCCU for their commitment to academia and their contribution to enhancing the university’s public outreach efforts.

He revealed the university's goal of making many of its operations self-financing, citing limited funding from school fees as a driving factor. Prof. Mitchual emphasised the crucial role of research and innovation in the university's growth and development.

"This generous donation will be instrumental in sustaining our public lecture series, designed to facilitate knowledge exchange and foster innovative ideas. We are thrilled to have UEWCCU as a partner in this endeavour. Their support reflects a shared investment in the future of education and academic discourse," Prof. Mitchual remarked.

Dr. Bernard B. B. Bingab, Board Chair of UEWCCU, reiterated the credit union’s dedication to supporting educational initiatives within the university. He highlighted the strong connection between the university's brand and that of the credit union, emphasising the importance of aligning their efforts with UEW's interests. Dr. Bingab also announced plans for a more strategic partnership between the two institutions.

"Investing in education is an investment in our future. We recognise the vital role of research and innovation in developing sustainable solutions to societal challenges. We are proud to be the first to support this important lecture series and hope to inspire others to contribute as well," he stated.

Prof. Esther Yeboah Danso-Wiredu, Director of DRID, expressed heartfelt appreciation for the donation and the opportunity to spearhead the university’s public lecture series initiative. She affirmed that the 2024 Public Lecture series would bring together prominent scholars and influential personalities to discuss critical issues concerning education.

"The Public Lecture is an annual event that provides a platform for scholars, policymakers, civil society organisations, politicians, key industry players, and the general public to deliberate on pressing issues affecting the nation. The 2024 event, scheduled for November, will focus on the theme ‘Empowering Minds, Shaping Futures: The Prospects and Challenges of 21st Century Education, Lessons for Ghana,’" she noted.

The UEWCCU's donation represents a significant step toward enhancing the academic experience for UEW students and fostering a culture of inquiry and innovation. With this generous support, UEW is poised to advance its mission to enhancing education and research, ensuring its continued leadership in academic excellence and innovation in Ghana and beyond.
