UEW Hosts 2023 IUCDS Seminar
The Inter-University Conference for Doctoral Studies (IUCDS), in collaboration with the School of Graduate Studies (SGS), University of Education Winneba (UEW), has organised a three-day seminar at the Jophus Anamuah-Mensah Conference Centre, North Campus, UEW.
The seminar, which took place from Tuesday, 17th, to Thursday, 19th January, 2023, was held on the theme "Promoting Staff Development Through Collaborative Research and Quality Teaching in Education."
In his opening address, Prof. Mawutor Avoke, Vice-Chancellor of UEW, stressed the importance of fostering collaborations with sister institutions both within and outside of Ghana, particularly in the West African sub-region, to maintain academic interest in doctoral programmes and raise the calibre of instruction and research at the institutions.
Prof. Avoke urged all PhD candidates to put much more effort into honing their research skills, bearing in mind that they would be guided through the research process by several resource persons, thesis supervisors, and examiners within and outside the University community for the realisation of the founding members’ vision.
The Executive Secretary of IUCDS, Prof. Dominic S. Y. Amuzu, urged students to familiarise themselves with all the processes of research work to enable them become critical-minded people. He cautioned students who contract people to write their thesis statements to refrain from the act.
On his part, the Council Chairman of IUCDS, Prof. Urbain K. Amoa, appealed to the government of the Republic of Ghana for support to sustain the conference and secure IUCDS’ long march to liberation.
Among the topics discussed at the three-day seminar were: choice of thesis title in relation to identification and statement of the problem; objective, research questions, and hypothesis; theoretical framework and literature review; research design or paradigm; methodology: population sampling techniques; data collection techniques or tools with justification; comparative study of the different methods of data collection; and guidelines for constructing questionnaires or test items and interviews.
The remaining topics are as follows: techniques for preparing for the data collection process, analysis, and interpretation; sampling fundamentals in relation to estimation theory and statistical inferences; documentation, preparation, defence, and format for thesis presentation; managing your students for effective supervision; managing your thesis supervisor; thesis planning and time management; application of Microsoft Teams information retrieved; plagiarism; and financing theses.
