UEW Finance Retreat Emphasises Ethical Stewardship and Financial Sustainability

The University of Education, Winneba (UEW), has reaffirmed its commitment to financial stewardship and sustainability at the Finance Retreat held under the theme "The Accountant as a Financial Steward in a Public Higher Education Institution."
The retreat, which took place at the Students Centre Seminar Room III, North Campus, UEW, brought together finance professionals to reflect on their roles in ensuring financial accountability and sustainability within the institution.

Welcoming participants to the retreat, Ms. Kpeli-Semabia Favour Mawusi, Head of the Finance Officer’s Secretariat, underscored the importance of financial professionals in shaping the university’s future.
"We are stewards and our roles extend beyond today; we must account for our actions and decisions. This retreat allows us to reflect on our responsibilities and how they impact the sustainability of the university," she noted.
She encouraged participants to engage actively in discussions and ensure that they leave the retreat better equipped to manage UEW’s financial resources more efficiently.

Delivering his keynote address, Prof. Stephen Jobson Mitchual, Vice-Chancellor of UEW, emphasised the critical role of finance professionals in the university’s success. He likened the retreat to a strategic military regrouping, where professionals must evaluate their strengths and weaknesses to improve their work.
"Finance is one of the most important sections of my management structure. Without financial resources, our dreams for UEW, including the construction of a university stadium, business block, new library, swimming pool, and science laboratory, would be mere wishful thinking," he stated.
Prof. Mitchual stressed the need for prudent financial management, particularly in an era where financial resources are scarce. He highlighted the importance of ethical conduct, warning against financial malpractice. "Any worker who is not ethical and professional poses a significant risk to the institution. We must uphold high standards and ensure that our financial reporting is accurate and transparent," he asserted.
The Vice-Chancellor also praised the Finance Officer, Dr. Theophilus Senyo Ackorlie, for his commitment to accountability and fiscal responsibility, particularly in overseeing the institution’s financial transactions. He lauded the decision to hold the retreat within the university, citing it as an example of prudent financial management. "Why should we spend thousands at external venues when we have excellent facilities here? This is good stewardship," he remarked.
Prof. Mitchual charged finance professionals to take their responsibilities seriously, avoid unnecessary delays in financial transactions, and contribute to building a financially sustainable institution. "Every finance professional must see themselves as a key player in the university’s development. Your role is not just about numbers but ensuring that UEW thrives through sound financial decisions," he emphasised.

Participants were engaged in a series of presentations covering topics relevant to the finance sector. Dr. Ackorlie provided an overview of the Office of the Finance Officer. Nana Benyin Boham, Assistant Manager of Business Development at Glico Pensions, led a discussion on the Provident Fund (Tier 3). Mr. Kwadwo Mpeani-Brantuo, a retired partner from Ernst & Young Ghana, addressed professional and work ethics for finance professionals in public universities. Furthermore, Mr. Evans Anto Mensah, lead consultant at PwC Ghana, presented on the significance of enhancing IPSAS compliance and accountability.
These sessions provided practical insights into enhancing financial efficiency and compliance within the university setting.
As the retreat concluded, participants left with a renewed commitment to financial stewardship, ethical professionalism, and the continuous improvement of financial systems to support UEW’s growth. The event underscored the university’s focus on accountability, transparency, and sustainability in financial management.
