Challenges of Managing Students Hall of Residence: The Case of the University Hall, University of Education, Winneba
Abstract
This paper discusses the experiences in Hall administration and management in the University Hall of the University of Education, Winneba. Hall administration covers general student services, Works and Maintenance, Accounts and Stores, Health and Sanitation. Some challenges which constrain work at the hall are counterproductive work behavior of staff; aging staff (particularly among health and sanitation workers), poor attitude of students and student leaders, procurement delays, and inadequate security. In order to mitigate these challenges it was recommended among others that the periodic transfers and job rotation of administrative and support staff of the Halls of Residence be religiously adhered to; adequate sanitary and artisans be employed on a casual basis; Health and Sanitation workers who are above 50 years be given duties which require less physical energy; work inspection checker and weekly maintenance report form be designed to help monitor workers and material usage; artisans be assigned solely to the Halls.
