Fees Adjustment at UEW
It has come to our attention that the National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS), in a press conference on Wednesday, 27th of December, 2022, addressed by its president, Mr. Dennis Appiah Larbi-Ampofo, alleged that the University of Education, Winneba (UEW), among other public institutions, had defied the 15% threshold approved by the Parliament of Ghana to charge unapproved fees. The allegation is not borne out by facts. The university finds it expedient, therefore, to set the records straight and correct the erroneous impression being created as follows:
- The UEW approved fees were released on late 31st December, 2022, a couple of days after the statement by NUGS. As a result, the obvious issue is: where did NUGS get the figures based on which they proceeded to make the allegations at the press conference?
- The University of Education, Winneba's adjustment of fees is based on rates approved by the Parliament and communicated by the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC), following all relevant internal consultations and approval by the University Council.
- It is worthy of note that the only previously approved fees were those gazetted in 2019/2020 (Ref. RMERD/NTPU/12/19/MDAS/FEES/5), in line with which UEW had adjusted fees for some years from 2019/2020 academic year through to 2021/ 2022 academic year.
- No approved fee for the current year is more than 15% of the fees for 2021/2022 academic year. Attached to this release are approved fees comparative for the 2021/2022 and 2022/2023 academic years.
The management wants to reassure all stakeholders involved—students, parents, and others—that the 2022/2023 academic year's fees are based on the threshold that has been approved by the Parliament of Ghana. We wish all our stakeholders a productive and fruitful new year.
Thank you.
Signed
Mrs. Wilhemina Tete-Mensah,
Ag. Registrar.
